Cornerback Malcolm Butler didn’t mince words Tuesday when he was asked about his preseason performance.
"Below my standards," he said. "I'm better than that. I will be better than that."
Butler has struggled at times this summer, yielding two touchdown passes in coverage in the last two games. At the same time, he’s shown the same sort of play-to-play, series-to-series intensity that he’s become known for. Last Friday against the Lions in Detroit, he forced a fumble when he punched a ball away from Golden Tate. And later, he tipped a pass that was eventually picked off by teammate Eric Rowe.
That was one of the reasons why he added a disclaimer at the end of his preseason assessment.
"No need to panic," he said. "That's how I feel about it. So there's that."
