The Bruins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Saturday night.

The Bruins got out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as Pavel Zacha got everything started with a power play goal 10:33 into the first period. Charlie McAvoy scored his first goal on the season 14:36 into the first period which made it 2-0 Boston.

The second period was quiet, with no scoring, while the Bruins did a good job protecting the net

The third period got off to a sloppy start as Joe Veleno scored his fifth goal of the season to cut the Boston lead to 2-1. The difference in the game was David Pastrnak scoring on a penalty shot 11:19 into the third period which made it 3-1 Bruins, giving them some cushion. Pastrnak was not done there as he also scored an empty net goal to make it 4-1. Pastrnak finished with three points as he had an assist and two goals.

The Bruins were very successful on the penalty kill tonight going four for four and not allowing any goals shorthanded. Boston has the best penalty kill in the entire league so far this season.

"In the third we expected their push and I thought we handled it pretty well," Jim Montgomery said after the game.

Jeremy Swayman finished the night with 22 saves.

The Bruins will be back in action on Monday when they host the Florida Panthers with puck drop set for 7 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES

The Bruins face the Detroit Red Wings tonight at 7 p.m. at TD Garden in an Original Six matchup. It is also Boston's first game this season versus an Eastern Conference opponent.

The Bruins placed Milan Lucic on long-term Injured Reserve this morning. Jim Montgomery told reporters today that Lucic will miss at least a couple of weeks. In the meantime, the Bruins called up Oskar Steen from Providence. Steen has been playing well down in Providence as he has recorded five points, three goals and two assists in five games. The Karlstad, Sweden native performed so well in training camp that he  was  one of Boston's final cuts.

"Really good camp, just playing fast and going to hard areas, playing inside the dots, a real strength of his,” Jim Montgomery said this morning. “Talking to the staff down in Providence, [head coach] Ryan Mougenel] specifically, he said that he's been really impactful the last three games," Montgomery continued.

Boston also sent down Jesper Boqvist to Providence after appearing in only one game for the Bruins.

The Bruins return to action tonight coming off of a tough 4-3 loss to Anaheim in overtime  on Thursday night. Despite the loss, Boston extended their 6-0-1 point streak to seven games. Boston plays their second game of their four game  home-stand tonight as they will host Florida on Monday and Toronto on Thursday.

Boston faces a Detroit team tonight that enters with a 5-2-1 start to the season. Although, they dropped their last two games to Seattle in overtime on Tuesday and Winnipeg on Thursday. Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat have been a dynamic duo for Detroit  as they have combined for 28 points in eight games. They also rank second and third respectively in the league scoring race. DeBrincat leads the NHL in goals with nine and the Red Wings rank second in the NHL in goals per game at 4.38.

“They’ve been dynamite – 5-on-5 and the power play,” Jim Montgomery said. “We’ve got to stay out of the box tonight and our rush defense and our reads and our defensemen having good gaps is going to be really important for us to have success," Montgomery continued.

Some milestones to keep an eye on for the Red Wings tonight are Andrew Copp is only two points away from 250 and J.T. Compher is just two points from recording 200.
