Things were looking good for the Sox for the first four innings, as they opened the scoring with a two out single from Connor Wong in the bottom of the fourth. In the next half inning, the Padres would score nine runs in nine batters before recording an out. San Diego had four singles, a double, and two home runs in that half inning, which was all they needed to defeat Boston tonight. They would only get one hit after the fifth inning. Rafael Devers cut the lead down to seven runs with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was all she wrote for the Red Sox offense.
Nick Pivetta was looking strong before the fifth, pitching four innings and giving up three hits and striking out four. But those totals would get up to five runs on seven hits and a walk. He was pulled for Greg Weissert who would give up four more runs on four hits, along with a strikeout and a walk. Chase Anderson pitched the rest of the game starting in the top of the sixth, where he allowed only one hit, and struck out and walked two batters.
My Player of the Game: Ceddanne Rafaela - While he didn't light up the stat sheet, Rafaela went 3-4 on the day, with a double off the monster in the bottom of the ninth. Another great game for my AL Rookie of the Year pick.
Tomorrow's game is slated for a 4:10 start back on NESN. Probable pitchers are Michael King (5-5, 3.75 ERA) and Tanner Houck (7-5, 2.18 ERA).
