FINAL: Los Angeles Angels 7, Red Sox 0 - More Defensive Mishaps lead to Fourth Straight Loss
The Red Sox (7-7) have now dropped their fourth game in a row, losing the first of a three game series against the Angels (7-6), 7-0. What was supposed to be a bounce back game for the team, turned into a disaster as early as the first inning.
Tanner Houck got the start in this one, and it definitely wasn't his best. He pitched five and two thirds and gave up 12 hits, seven runs but only four earned, and only struck out two. He earned his first loss of the season. In contrast to the Orioles series, the bullpen was great tonight, as Brenan Bernardino and Chase Anderson combined for three and a third shutout innings, and four strikeouts.
Nothing much of note for the bats tonight, as they collected only three hits, coming off the bats of Jarren Duran, Pablo Reyes, and Masataka Yoshida. The Sox struck out ten times tonight, with seven coming at the hands of Reid Detmers
What has been a trend as of late for the Red Sox is their defense, and not a good trend. They committed three errors tonight, all leading to runs scored for the Angels. The Sox now lead MLB in errors with 16, just one ahead of the Oakland A's.
My Player of the Game: Jarren Duran - It was tough to find a bright spot in this game, but Duran had a double, his third in two games, and a walk, which was his first this month.
This series will continue with game two tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. Probable starter for the Angels is Griffin Canning (0-1, 8.38 ERA), with the Red Sox starter is undecided. _______________________________________

WHAT'S UP
The Red Sox lost to the Orioles in 10 innings last night, 9-4...It was Boston’s 3rd extra-inning game (1-2 record), tied with DET and PIT for most in MLB. Connor Wong (1-for-1) pinch-hit in the 8th inning and hit a game-tying solo HR. Garrett Whitlock started and allowed 1 run in 5.0 innings (4 H, 2 BB, 4 SO).
Tonight’s game is the 4th of 6 between the Red Sox and Angels, all in a 10-day span from 4/5-14. The Sox won a 3-game series in Anaheim last weekend, 2-1, outscoring the Angels 21-10. The Sox are 5-5 vs. LAA since the start of 2023 and 22-14 since the start of 2018.
Rob Refsnyder began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester Wednesday at Syracuse, starting at DH. Vaughn Grissom is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with the WooSox tonight at Syracuse.
Tanner Houck has not allowed a run in his last 3 starts, beginning 10/1/23...He currently owns a career-long 18.0-inning scoreless streak (8 H, 5 BB, 23 SO).
Through the Red Sox’ first 13 games of the season, Boston’s starting pitchers have allowed just 14 runs (11 ER) in 68.1 innings with 75 SO and 20 BB. Sox starters lead MLB in ERA (1.45), WHIP (0.98), and opponent AVG (.188)...They rank 3rd in SO (75) and SO/9.0 IP (9.88).
The Red Sox have hit 16 HR, 3rd-most in the AL and tied for 5th-most in MLB. Tyler O’Neill has hit 6 HR, tied with Mike Trout for the MLB lead...No other AL player has hit more than 4 HR. O’Neill ranks 2nd in MLB in SLG (.769) and OPS (1.229).
Bobby Dalbec was recalled from Triple-A Worcester today after being sent down Monday. He hit a home run for the WooSox on Wednesday night. This will put the Sox over the 26 player limit, meaning that either Romy Gonzales (sprained wrist) or Rafael Devers (shoulder pain) will have a short stint on the IL.
