FINAL: Detroit Tigers 5, Red Sox 0 - Pivetta Ties Clemens, Sox Muster Two Hits in Shutout Loss taken at BSJ Headquarters (Red Sox)

Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox (28-29) lose to the Tigers (28-28) by way of a 5-0 shutout, in which the Boston offense could only get two hits after being held hitless by Jack Flaherty through six and a third.

It was a slow night for the offensive sides of the ball until the top of the fifth inning, where the games first hit would be a solo home run off of the bat of Akil Baddoo. The Red Sox wouldn't get their first hit until the bottom of the seventh, where Rob Refsnyder would single to left, and the other Red Sox hit would also be a single to left from Reese McGuire. Four of the Tigers runs came by way of the long ball, as Riley Greene and Gio Urshela homered tonight as well.

As far as pitching goes, Nick Pivetta had a great outing, where he would tie the Red Sox record for consecutive strikeouts with eight in a row, which was last done by Roger Clemens in 1986, in a game against the Mariners where he struck out twenty batters. Pivetta struck out nine Tigers in total, and gave up only three hits and two runs. Chris Martin had a not so great outing in comparison, as he pitched one inning, where he gave up three runs on four hits, two of which being home runs. Tigers starter Jack Flaherty had an amazing game, being perfect through four innings and having a no hitter through six and a third.

My Player of the Game: Nick Pivetta - After a couple of rocky outings for him after his stint on the IL, striking out eight in a row to tie Roger Clemens' record will surely boost his confidence for his next start.

This four game series will continue tomorrow night with first pitch being at 7:10 p.m.. Probable starters are Kenta Maeda (2-1, 5.80 ERA) and Tanner Houck (4-5, 1.90 ERA).
