FINAL: Red Wings 5, Bruins 2 - Detroit gets best of Boston for 2nd straight game
The Bruins weren't god-awful in this game, but they had way too many lulls against a very active Red Wings team that has gotten the best of Boston in their last two outings — the only regulation defeats of the season.
"I guess Detroit didn't eat a turkey dinner," Jim Montgomery told reporters after the game. "Our execution was very, very sloppy. We expected it not to be great ... we haven't practiced in six or seven days. But you would expect our habits and details would hold water until we got our legs.
"We had some poor turnovers and poor penalties, and really understanding momentum shifts. ...
Three of Detroit's goals came on the power play, or immediately after. Red Wings were 2 of 6 on the power play, with another goal immediately after one expired. Both PP goals came within seconds of it starting.
Boston was just way too sloppy with 11 giveaways to Detroit's 3.
“They played fast. We didn’t," Montgomery told reporters after the game. “The only part of our game that I thought was good was our breakouts. Power play wasn’t good. Penalty kill wasn’t good. Not gonna win many games like that.”
Detroit exploited a big weakness at the bumper during its power play time.
"I thought Joe Sacco had an excellent gameplan, just like in Detroit," Montgomery said.
