Final: Red Sox 3, Yankees 1 - Crochet deals, Chapman finishes it off as Yoshida and Bregman provide the offense taken at BSJ Headquarters (Red Sox)

NEW YORK - The Boston Red Sox win game one of their wildcard series against the New York Yankees 3-1.

Tonight showcased a pitching battle between Max Fried and Garrett Crochet. However, Crochet shut down New York, allowing just one run and four hits in his appearance.

The Yankees jumped to an early lead in the second inning with a solo home run from Anthony Volpe. Facing a 1-2 count, Volpe went opposite-field, landing a ball into New York's right field porch.

The Red Sox used a righty-heavy batting lineup against the left-handed Fried, yet they struggled through the first half of the game to score a run. Boston's best chance against Fried came in the fourth inning when the Red Sox left two runners in scoring position.

In the seventh inning, Fried's time on the mound finished. He collected an out against Jarren Duran to start the inning, but Aaron Boone elected to put in Luke Waver against Ceddanne Rafaela.

Facing Weaver, Rafaela battled and made it to first after an 11-pitch walk. With Rafaela at first base, Nick Sogard hit a sharp line drive into the outfield and hustled into second base to put runners in scoring position with one out.

Masataka Yoshida came into the game to pinch hit for Rob Refsnyder, and he gave the Red Sox the lead, sending both runners home with an RBI base hit.

After pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, Crochet went back out for the eighth inning. Crochet struck out two batters to finish his night with 11 K's, but he gave up a single to Volpe in the process.

After pitching 7.2 innings, Crochet was taken out. Aroldis Chapman entered the game to complete a four-out save. With a runner at first base, José Caballero popped out to right field to end the eighth inning for New York.

In the ninth inning, the Red Sox added another run to their lead. With two outs, Trevor Story recorded a base hit, and Alex Bregman followed with an RBI double to give Boston a 3-1 lead.

Chapman returned to the mound in the bottom of the ninth, but the Yankees gave him trouble. Facing New York's top of the order, Chapman allowed three consecutive singles to Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger, which loaded the bases with no outs.

Despite the jam, Chapman retired three straight hitters to give the Red Sox the game one victory.

Crochet's phenomenal start showcased that he's everything the Red Sox paid for. He kept the Red Sox in the game when the bats weren't producing, and battled through multiple innings to keep the bullpen fresh.

Yoshida and Sogard became unlikely heroes tonight. Sogard's hustle double and Yoshida's RBI pinch hit shifted the game's momentum, and the Red Sox made the Yankees pay against their bullpen.

Tomorrow, the Red Sox will look to advance into the ALDS with a win Wednesday. Brayan Bello gets the start against Carlos Rodon, and first pitch will be at 6:08 p.m.
