The Red Sox avoided the ignominious distinction of being shut out on consecutive nights at home by two different last place teams.

But that's about it.

Managing just three hits -- the Red Sox were beaten by the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1. The Red Sox have scored just one run in their last 18 innings.

Both Cincinnati runs run were unearned -- the result of throwing errors by Rafael Devers (sixth) and Xander Bogaerts (ninth).

The Sox rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on a single by Alex Verdugo. But with the potential tying run at third, Trevor Story fanned for the final out.
