Leading by a run with three outs to go, the Red Sox bullpen underwent one implosion after another, resulting in a 10-5 10-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

A solo homer from Xander Bogaerts in the bottom of the eighth appeared to set the Sox up for their second straight win. But Hansell Robles and Jake Diekman combined to allow the tying run to score and force extra innings.

After that, it went from bad to worse, with Matt Barnes, after recording too quick outs, allowing a homer to Taylor Ward, then single and a walk. Hirokazu Sawamura was no better, with a run-scoring single to Anthony Rendon and a three-run homer to Jared Walsh for a six-run 10th.

The loss was the fifth in five tries for the Red Sox in extra innings and completely negated a strong start by Garrett Whitlock, who allowed two runs on two hits through five with nine strikeouts.
