Final: Red Sox 6, Yankees 3 - Red Sox win first game of series in the Bronx
The Red Sox win game one of their series in the Bronx 6-3.
Neither side played a clean baseball game tonight, but the Red Sox capitalized on mistakes the Yankees made throughout this game.
In the second inning, the Red Sox scored their first run in an ugly defensive inning from the Yankees. Luis Gil started the inning making an error on the pitcher's mound, and the Red Sox were able to put runners on the corners with two outs. As David Hamilton attempted to steal second base, Ben Rice overthrew his throwout attempt to second, which scored Ceddanne Rafaela from third base.
In the bottom half of the second inning, Rice redeemed himself, tying the game with a solo home run against Lucas Giolito.

In the fourth inning, the Yankees took the lead as a result of poor defense from Boston. Jazz Chisholm started the inning with a single, and after a wild throw from Carlos Narváez at second base, Chisholm advanced to third base. Paul Goldschmidt then drove home Chisholm with an RBI single.

The Red Sox tied things up in the fifth inning as Gil's struggles on the mound continued. After loading up the bases with one out, Nathaniel Lowe drove in the tying run on a sac fly to the outfield.
After allowing two walks in the fifth inning, Alex Cora took out his starter for Justin Wilson. Facing the lefty bat of Chisholm, Wilson allowed an RBI single to the all-star second baseman, and the Yankees took their lead back.
After Gil left the game, the Yankees brought in trade-deadline acquisition Camillo Dovalo. With two runners on base, Roman Anthony drove home Hamilton from second base which tied the game again.
The Red Sox finally took back their lead in the seventh inning. Trevor Story started it off with a leadoff single, and Lowe recorded his second RBI of the night with a deep double to right field.

After the fifth inning, Boston's bullpen completely shutdown the Yankees. Aroldis Chapman picked up the save against his former club, and the Red Sox secured the first victory of the series.
Boston still had issues recording hits with runners in scoring position, but their hitting looked better compared to previous games. Overall, the Red Sox recorded 10 hits in this game, and every batter in the top of the order recorded at least one hit. Most notably, Alex Bregman recorded three hits in today's game including a walk.
The bullpen became the unsung hero in this game. Greg Weissert, Steven Matz, and Garrett Whitlock all pitched quality outings in relief, and Chapman picked up his 23rd save of the season.
It wasn't a perfect game, but the Red Sox made fewer mistakes than the Yankees which helped them get this win.
The Red Sox continue their series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with Brayan Bello on the mound.
