The Red Sox win the first game of their series against the San Francisco Giants 7-5.

In an offensive back-and-forth game, the Red Sox were able to collect more runs in consecutive innings helping out a struggling Hunter Dobbins.

In four innings on the mound, Dobbins allowed four earned runs allowing five walks and four hits. The rookie struggled every inning with his location, and this was most notable in the 2nd inning.

After allowing a run to start the game in the 1st, Dobbins walked three consecutive batters loading the bases with no outs. The Red Sox luckily turned a double play, but a runner still scored. Dobbins also allowed an RBI hit to Mike Yastrzemski giving the Giants an early 3-0 lead.

Boston was able to respond in the next inning thanks to their bottom of the order. Ceddanne Rafaela started it off with a double to left field, and David Hamilton delivered right after with a two-run home run making up for a misplay he made at second base.

In the 4th inning, the Red Sox tied the game with Rafaela getting an RBI hit that snuck past the left half of the infield.

However, this initial tie didn't last long. In the same inning, the Giants grounded into another double play with the bases loaded, but they still were able to bring home a run retaking their lead.

The back-and-forth run trading continued in the 5th and 6th innings. Roman Anthony tied the game again with an RBI single, and Abraham Toro gave Boston their first lead from an error in the field.

The Giants tied it in the bottom 5th with a Wilmer Flores RBI against Brennan Bernardino, and the score was now 5-5.

In the next inning, Boston took their lead back with another clutch home run from Rafaela.

After Bernardino's outing, Boston's bullpen didn't allow another run for the rest of the game. Zack Kelly got it started striking out two batters, and he was taken out for Justin Wilson who finished the 6th inning.

The Red Sox gave Wilson run support in the 7th inning with an RBI from Wilyer Abreu, and Wilson only allowed one hit in that same inning.

Greg Weissert pitched a scoreless 8th inning, and Aroldis Chapman finished the game picking up the save.

Even when Dobbins didn't have his best stuff on the mound, it was great to see the Red Sox finally pick up one of their starters to get the win. The bottom of the order had the most notable appearances in this game, as both home runs from Hamilton and Rafaela became huge differences in this game.

Most importantly, in his first game against the Red Sox, Rafael Devers went 0-5 at plate. Devers' lone strikeout came in the 9th inning against Chapman's 102 mph fastball.

The Red Sox play the next game of the series tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. with Brayan Bello on the mound.

WHAT'S UP

The Red Sox face off against Rafael Devers for the first time since Sunday's trade.

Kristian Campbell was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. Wilyer Abreu returns to the lineup after being on the IL, and Campbell was optioned because of this.

The Red Sox traded Zach Penrod to the Dodgers for cash considerations.

“There’s a good chance he’ll go on a rehab assignment, soon,” said Alex Cora said about Masataka Yoshida. “The exact date, we don’t know yet. But he’s feeling great. Everybody feels like the throwing part of it, we’re over the hump now."
