WHAT’S UP
The Red Sox and Giants will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park.
Both clubs will utilize openers to start the game. The Sox will feature left-hander Brennan Bernardino and Giants will have Scott Alexander on the hill.
Bernardino is making his fifth start and his second appearance of the series. The southpaw made an appearance on Friday night, striking out the only batter he faced. In his last 20 outings, starting on May 26, he has allowed four runs in 22 2/3 innings pitched (29 strike outs).
Boston has a lineup that is more right-handed heavy due to Alexander starting. Triston Casas and Jarren Duran will start the game on the bench but are expected to play later in the game.
The Sox are looking to get back on track after snapping their five-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon, 3-2. Giants third baseman J.D. Davis hit a walk-off homer to break the tie in the bottom of the ninth off All-Star closer Kenley Jansen.
Nick Pivetta is expected to pitch in a bulk innings relief role following Bernardino. Pivetta has not allowed a run in his last 12 innings pitched, tied for the fourth longest active scoreless streak among major league relievers.
With a win today, the Sox would improve to 20-12-2 in series play, including 7-1-0 in their last 8, beginning June 30. Boston would also improve to 6-0-1 on the road facing NL opponents, and 8-5-1 in Interleague series overall. With a loss, they would lose consecutive road series for the first time this year (last road series: 1-2 vs. OAK, 7/17-19). Boston is 14-4-1 in series when they win Game 1. They are 9-4 in rubber games.
