WHAT’S UP
The Red Sox took the series opener 7-0 against the Athletics on Monday night. Boston dominated Oakland’s lineup, striking out a season-high 18 batters while limiting them to one hit. Nick Pivetta tossed six scoreless innings while setting a franchise record for strike outs in relief (13).
Joe Jacques will make his first career start and serve as the Sox opener for Game 2 of the series. The southpaw tossed a perfect inning in relief on Sunday against the Cubs. He has not allowed a baserunner in four road outings (3 1/3 innings with two strikeouts).
Justin Turner will look to extend his hitting streak to 14 games against A’s righty Luis Medina. Turner is 1-for-3 in his career against Medina with one strikeout. During his current streak, the veteran is 20-for-49 with five doubles, three homers and 17 RBI. Turner has been scorching hot at the dish over his last nine games posting a .333 batting average with four runs scored.
Boston has recorded 10 hits or more in 10 of their last 12 games, including their last seven-straight games from 7/1-8. They’re the only team in MLB this season with seven-straight 10-hit games.
In 12 July games, the Red Sox lead MLB in batting average (.311), slugging (.532), and OPS (.897), and rank second in OBP (.365; 133-for-427, 37 2B, 3 3B, 17 HR, 34 BB).
PRE-GAME NOTES
Infielder Pablo Reyes continues to rehab with the Portland Sea Dogs and will play center field tonight. It feels like the Sox are kicking the can a little further down the street with Reyes before activating him from the IL.
Trevor Story will begin his rehab assignment this coming weekend with the Portland Sea Dogs.
“He looks like he might start playing over the weekend,” said Alex Cora on WEEI. “We’re going to have conversations today and see how he feels physically. If everything goes well, there is a good chance he’ll join one of the affiliates this weekend.”
The Sox plan to have Story play five innings at shortstop Friday, he will be penciled in as the designated hitter on Saturday, and then play another five innings at shortstop Sunday.
