Final: Red Sox 1, Padres 11 - Tanner Houck allowed 7 earned runs in lopsided loss to the Padres
Trevor's Game Notes:
Shelled: Tanner Houck was the starter for today's game, and things didn't go well for him on his 28th birthday. Leading the American League in ERA before the game, Houck allowed 7 earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. Houck wasn't able to keep the Padres from hitting, starting in the 2nd inning when Ha-Seong Kim opened the scoring with an RBI double. Manny Machado did the most damage for the Padres this game, hitting 2 home runs against Houck. In a span of 3 innings (3rd and 5th), Machado would hit a 2-run home run to left field and a 3-run blast to center field. Even without Bogaerts and Tatis, the Padres managed to produce runs from top to bottom. By the end of the game, 1st baseman Dominic Smith would pitch for the Red Sox in the 9th inning as a way to give Boston's bullpen a rest.
Off Game: Michael King started for the Padres, only allowing a single run. The Rhode Island native gave up his lone run to Jarren Duran, who hit a solo home run to right field. With the Padres up 10-0 by the 5th inning, Boston looked defeated both offensively and defensively. Duran's home run was the only form of offense the Red Sox could provide, as their lineup provided only 6 hits in this game. Boston also recorded 3 errors in the game from the infield.
The Red Sox will wrap up their series with the Padres tomorrow at 1:35 p.m.

WHAT'S UP
The Red Sox lost 9-2 against the San Diego Padres in game 1 of their weekend series in Fenway. Nick Pivetta threw four scoreless innings to open his start Friday. But the Padres scored nine runs in the fifth inning before Pivetta and reliever Greg Weissertrecorded a single out.
Three of the seven hits Pivetta allowed, including both extra-base hits, came against his sweeper. He allowed three hits on his four-seamer and one hit on his slider. The Red Sox scored just one run in the fourth inning despite putting two men on base with no outs. Tyler O’Neill struck out swinging and Masataka Yoshida flied out before Wong came through with two outs. Dom Smith lined out to end the frame.
The Red Sox claimed right-handed reliever Alex Speas off waivers from the Astros and optioned him to Triple-A Worcesteron Saturday. Speas is 26 and can throw the baseball hard. He was up to 100.4 mph with his fastball in three major league outings for Texas last year.
First baseman Triston Casas began taking dry swings Wednesday after he underwent an MRI Tuesday that revealed the ribcage is properly healed. Alex Cora confirmed it’s unlikely the 24-year-old will return before the All-Star Break.
The Red Sox are being cautious with Vaughn Grissom’s rehab. The 23-year-old second baseman has been on the IL since June 2 with a right hamstring strain. Cora gave no timetable for Grissom’s return. He missed Boston’s entire spring training schedule and first 32 regular season games with a left hamstring strain.
