Final: Yankees 3, Red Sox 1 - Yankees Out Pitch the Sox, Homers from Torres and Calhoun the Difference

The Red Sox wasted a outstanding outing from Tanner Houck and drop the second game of the series in the Bronx, 3-1. Houck limited the Yankees to just two runs over six innings but his offense failed to support him. Domingo Germán was impressive, only surrendering a solo blast to Rafael Devers. The Yankees bullpen was lights out and their offense was led by homers from Willie Calhoun and Gleyber Torres.

Tanner Houck is on the mound for the Sox, he is coming off a disappointing start against the Rays where he allowed four runs over five innings on Sunday against the Rays (five hits, four walks and six strikeouts). On the plus side, Houck has pitched five innings in nine of his last 11 starts this season. The righty owns a 2.28 ERA in nine career games against the Yankees (four starts).

Reese McGuire is a career .500 hitter against Yankees' Germán. McGuire also leads all AL catchers in BAPIP (.419) and has only allowed two stolen bases in his last 101 innings at catcher. This comes after he allowed 20 stolen bases in 109 innings to start the season. 

Rafael Devers continued his dominance over Gerrit Cole on Friday night, hitting his seventh homer of his career of the Yankees righty. He’s also now 9-for-33 (.273 batting average) in his career against the right-handed pitcher in 37 plate appearances spanning 13 games.

“I haven’t thought very many times it’s been a really bad pitch,” said Cole postgame to reporters. “Raffy seems to let me know otherwise. So pretty good pitch, well executed, but better swing.”

Triston Casas is starting to swing a better bat at the plate over the last seven games. Casas is 8-for-20 during that span and has two doubles, one triple and a homer. He has a .268 AVG and an .832 OPS since 5/1 (.137 AVG and .585 OPS in April).

WHO'S COLD

The Red Sox are 5-6 in Houck’s starts this season. They’re lost five straight times he’s pitched. Boston has been held to 18 runs in their last seven games. Over that span, they have hit .216 with 4 HR and a .653 OPS.

PRE-GAME NOTES

Red Sox top outfield prospect Miguel Bleis will miss the remainder of regular season after suffering a left shoulder subluxation that will require season-ending surgery, as first reported by BostonSportsJournal.com. 

Adam Duvall will start for a second straight night after being removed from the injured list on Friday. The Sox outfielder will get the start in center field and will bat fifth behind Devers.

Germán has allowed two earned runs-or-fewer in five of his last six starts (since 5/1), posting a 2.31 ERA (35.0IP, nine earned runs) in that span...has held opponents to a .164 BA (20-for-122) over that stretch.   

Josh Donaldson has four home runs in his last six games and five homers in 11 games this season. He hit a solo blast in the sixth inning on Friday vs. Boston (1-for-4, one run, one homer, one RBI).

DJ LeMahieu has reached base safely 41-of-52 starts this season. He’s also hit safely in 21 of his last 31 games.
