WHAT’S UP

The Red Sox will face former right-hander Nathan Eovaldi in the series finale on Thursday night from Fenway Park. Eovaldi left the Sox this offseason the Rangers after signing a two-year, $34 million deal. He is off to a hot start this season owning a 10-3 record and a 2.64 ERA in 17 starts.

The Sox will be without Jarren Duran in the lineup and while Alex Cora isn't calling it an off day for the speedy outfielder, he indicated he needed to rotate other players into the lineup. 

"We got some good players and we got to move them around," said Cora when asked why Duran was not in the starting lineup. "I know he is swinging the bat well and (Triston) Casas is swinging the bat well too and we got to get (Adam) Duvall going to which is important. We can use him off the bench, if you want to call it an off day... then I guess yeah. He'll be ready to play," added Cora. 

Duran has been one of the team's hottest hitters, he's 9-for-18 (.500) with five doubles, a triple and a homer over the last five games. Duvall will play center field and Masataka Yoshida will be in left field. 

Kutter Crawford will make his first career start against the Rangers. His only appearance against them was last season (5/13/22), where he tossed two scoreless innings of relief. In eight starts this season, Crawford has a 5.30 ERA and opponents own a .282 batting average against him. 

PRE-GAME NOTES

The Red Sox announced before the game that they signed catcher Jorge Alfaro to a one-year, major league contract. To make room for Alfaro the team designated catcher Caleb Hamilton for assignment. The 30-year-old began the season playing for the WooSox and was hitting the cover off the ball during his time with the team. He was batting .320 (56-for-175) with six homers and 30 RBI in 43 games. While in Worcester, Alfaro was used at catcher, first base and designated hitter. Prior to rejoining the Sox organization, he had a brief cup of coffee with the Rockies who he signed with after he opted out of his deal with Boston.
