Final: Red Sox 4, Rangers 2 - Sox score first off Justin Turner's RBI single

The Red Sox came out swinging off Rangers' righty Jon Gray, scoring two runs all started by leadoff man Jarren Duran. The Sox leadoff man drove the first pitch he saw into left field and then stole second. Justin Turner's RBI single scored Duran and Adam Duvall's blooper into center field later scored Turner. Masataka Yoshida led off the Sox half of the fifth inning with a double into the left field corner and then Turner drives in his second run of the game. Adolis García hit a two-run homer, his 22nd of the season off Bello in the sixth inning. David Hamilton tacked on another run for the Sox in the bottom of the sixth. The speedy infielder hit a grounder past the first baseman and the ball ended up in right field. As García attempted to make the play, the ball went under his glove, Christian Arroyo scored and Hamilton ends up on third base. Hamilton was credited with a double on the play. Bello went seven innings again giving up eight hits, no walks, two earned runs, one homer and struck out three. The young righty earned his sixth win of the season.

WHAT'S UP?

The Red Sox will turn to Brayan Bello to get the club back on track against the AL West leading Texas Rangers. Bello is coming off an impressive start against the Marlins where he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning but ultimately took the loss. The 24-year-old was particularly good in the month of June, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.14 ERA, allowing eight runs through 33 2/3 innings pitched while also holding opponents to a .174 batting average.

Bello has one career appearance against Texas, the righty didn't allow a run in six innings while surrendering three hits and striking out five in the win (Sept. 3, 2022). 

Triston Casas is not in the lineup to face Rangers' righty Jon Gray. Over the last five games, Casas is 2-for-14 (.143) with one double and six strikeouts. Justin Turner will get that start at first base because of his track record against Gray, where he's 13-for-39  (.333) with two homers and three doubles. 

PRE-GAME NOTES

The Red Sox announced that right-handed reliever Wyatt Mills underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. Mills had been shutdown by the team since mid-March due to a flexor issue. He was initially placed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation to begin the season but was later moved to the 60-day IL in April. The Sox acquired Mills from the Royals on Dec. 16 for minor league right-hander Jacob Wallace. 

As players begin to come off the IL in the coming days, Alex Cora may use Turner at second base to add additional offense. 

“I just want to make sure that he’s not (playing first one day) and the next day he plays second,” said Cora, who added that he wanted to have Turner work with a number of shortstops to get acclimated. “I mentioned it to him today and he was like, ‘Good - I’m ready.’ The range (may be limited), but as long as we make the routine play, we’ll be fine.”
