WHAT’S UP
The Red Sox begin a three-game series against the Mets at Fenway Park on Friday night. Boston returns home following a 3-3 roadtrip and dropping their last two games to the lowly Athletics.
The Sox are currently three games out of the American League wild-card race.
Kutter Crawford will be on the bump to open the series opposite Kodai Senga. Crawford last appeared on Sunday in the series finale against the Cubs, where he struck out a career high nine batters over six innings.
The right-hander will face the Mets for the first time in his career. Crawford has been strong over his last five starts, posting a 3-1 record with a 3.04 ERA.
Justin Turner will carry a 15-game hitting streak into the contest and play second base. Turner is expected to play second base at least once a week, this will be his second start at the position since last weekend against the Cubs. Over his latest hitting streak, Turner is 22-for-57 with four homers and 20 RBI. His hitting streak is the longest active in MLB, and second-longest by a Red Sox player aged 38 or older (longest: Ted Williams -17 games from 7/23-8/9/57).
Masataka Yoshida will look to extend his hitting streak to five-games. The Japanese-born star is tied with Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette for second in MLB with 37 multi-hit games. He has recorded multiple hits in 10 of his last 13 games, including eight straight from 6/30-7/14.
With a win tonight, Alex Cora will tie former Sox skipper Jimy Williams seventh all-time with 414 wins as Red Sox manager. The next milestone for Cora will be to pass John Farrell who is sixth all-time with 432 wins.
This is the 12th year in which the Red Sox and Mets are facing off in the regular season, having most recently done so in 2021. This is the Mets’ seventh time visiting Fenway Park in the regular season (also most recently in 2021).
PRE-GAME NOTES
Trevor Story will begin his rehab assignment on Friday night when he plays five innings at shortstop for the Portland Sea Dogs. The plan for Story is to play three games this weekend, he will be the DH Saturday, and play shortstop again on Sunday.
The Red Sox officially signed their first two draft picks catcher Kyle Teel and infielder Nazzan Zanetello. Teel signs for $4.663 million which is a below slot value for the No. 14 overall pick. Zanetello signs for an above slot value of $3 million, the No. 50 overall pick was valued at $1.698 million.
