The Boston Bruins defeat the Detroit Red Wings in a defensive battle that went the distance.

Despite losing David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, and other regular members of their roster, the Bruins put up a fight on both sides of the ice.

It was a quiet start to the game. The Bruins and Red Wings combined for 10 shots on goal through the first period, but each side had close scoring chances.

In the second period, the Bruins started the scoring with a goal from Morgan Geekie. The Bruins forechecked the puck and Elias Lindholm found the puck on his stick on the blue line. Lindholm quickly fired a shot to the net, and Geekie tipped the shot for the first goal of the game.

The Bruins played solid defense in front of Jeremey Swayman through the first two periods, but the same couldn't be replicated in the third period. Eight minutes into the period, the Red Wings transitioned into Boston's defensive zone, and a shot tipped off of Lucas Raymond's stick resulted in a tie game.

However, the tie didn't last long. The Bruins landed on the power play after a high sticking call on Ben Chiarot, and Geekie scored his 20th goal of the season off a one-timer shot.

All the Bruins needed to do was kill off six minutes to get the win, but the Red Wings fought until the very end. Detroit pulled Cam Talbot to give them the six-on-five advantage, and Michael Rasmussen tied the game off an assist from Patrick Kane to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Bruins couldn't contain their discipline. Elias Lindholm was called for a trip on Alex Debrincat, giving Detroit a quality amount of time during the five minute overtime.

Thankfully, a successful kill from Boston's penalty kill helped send the Bruins and Red Wings into a shootout.

In the shootout, the Bruins ended up on top. Casey Mittelstadt scored the lone goal for the Bruins, and Swayman stopped three straight shots to give Boston the 3-2 victory.

The Bruins were lights out on the penalty kill, and they were solid defensively for the majority of this game. Swayman had an incredible game and came up clutch when it mattered most, and Geekie was the driving factor on offense.

Boston will now travel to Detroit to play the second game of a home-and-home series. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
