Final: Jets 8, Bruins 1 - Swayman allows 8 goals as Bruins lose first game of road trip

Wow, that was embarrassing. In their first game of their five-game west coast road trip, the Bruins fall to the Jets 8-1 in embarrassing fashion.

In the first period, the Jets scored two goals giving themselves a commanding lead. Their first goal came off the power play as Vladislav Namestikov banked in a rebound goal from an inaccurate shot that ricocheted off the boards, and the second goal happened as Mark Scheifele scored a one-time goal in front of the net off a turnover.

At the beginning of the second period with the Jets on the power play, Scheifele scored his second one-timer goal furthering Boston's deficit. The Bruins were able to respond with a power play one-timer goal from David Pastrnak, but that became the only highlight for Boston this night.

Following Pastrnak's goal, the Jets ended up scoring five unanswered goals on Jeremy Swayman, taking advantage of every miscue Boston showcased. 

In the third period alone, the Jets doubled the amount of goals they scored in this game, as the Bruins most likely played their worst period of hockey this season. Undisciplined penalties, turnovers, poor goaltending, and lack of back checking were all on full display in this period as it seemed like the Bruins completely gave up on this game. 

During the final period, Trent Frederic tried giving Boston motivation by fighting David Gustafsson, but even that plan went south. Winnipeg didn't like Frederic's decision to fight an inexperienced Gustafsson, which seemingly inspired the Jets embarrass Boston even more. During the next face-off, Jets' captain Adam Lowry elected to fight Nikita Zadorov in response, and the Jets added their seventh and eighth goals after the scrums. 

Overall, this will likely be Boston's worst game they will play this year. All the reoccurring flaws Boston has shown this season were on full display and the Jets took advantage of every single one. The Jets were the more organized, disciplined, and motivated team and this game showed it. 

This was also the worst performance Swayman had this entire season. While the defense in front of him didn't help by puck chasing the entire game, allowing eight goals on 35 shots is terrible for one of the highest paid goalies in the NHL. This is an awful way to start a road trip.

Boston will now travel to Vancouver facing off against the Canucks Thursday at 10 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES

The Bruins will play their first game of their west coast road trip in Winnipeg facing off against the Jets. This is the first time the teams have faced off against each other this season.

Despite missing Tuesday's practice, David Pastrnak will play in tonight's game against the Jets. Joe Sacco announced that Pastrnak dealt with an upper body injury. The Bruins did not bring an extra forward for their road trip in the case Pastrnak will not play. 

Former Bruins defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk has announced his retirement from the NHL. Shattenkirk played his final season with the Bruins last season.
