WHAT’S UP
The Red Sox will play their 100th game of the season on Sunday night as they close out a three game set with the Mets from Fenway Park.
Brennan Bernardino will start the game as an opener, he will be followed by a bulk reliever. Bernardino has been effective in the opener role this season, he has made three starts allowing one run, three hits and one walk while striking out seven. Overall, the left-hander has a 2.48 ERA allowing just nine runs over 32 2/3 innings (28 appearances).
Nick Pivetta will be available on Sunday after tossing one inning on Saturday night. Chris Murphy and Brandon Walter will also be available to serve in the bulk role against the Mets.
“We needed Nick today in that inning,” manager Alex Cora said after Saturday’s win. “We did. It’s one of those that we’re OK (Sunday). We know what we’re going to do. He might be part of it. He might not be part of it. But that eighth inning today after two long days and where we were bullpen-wise, he gave us those three outs and we were able to get 27.”
Triston Casas will look to build off Saturday night’s game where he hit two home runs off Mets’ ace Max Scherzer. It was the first time a rookie has hit two homers off the future Hall of Hame hurler.
“They’ve been flying, jumping for hits. Things have been turning my way, so I’m just going to keep riding this as long as I can because there’s going to be a stretch where this doesn’t happen,” said Casas.
Alex Verdugo will not be in the lineup to begin the game. The outfielder has been in a slump going hitless in his last 16 at-bats with three walks. Verdugo is hitting .134 with a .213 on-base percentage, .239 slugging percentage, .452 OPS with two homers since June 28.
“Just been late on fastballs, out in front on offspeed pitches,” Cora said. “Swinging and missing more than usual. So I think giving him a day today can hopefully help him out.”
PRE-GAME NOTES
John Schreiber is expected to be activated off the injured list on Tuesday before the start of the Braves series. The right-hander has been on the IL since mid-May with a terse major strain. The Red Sox wanted to give Schreiber a few days off after his last rehab appearance before activating him for the start of the Braves series.
Trevor Story and Reese McGuire will be assigned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. Story will be continuing his rehab outings after playing in three games this weekend for the Portland Sea Dogs. McGuire is beginning his rehab as he comes back from an oblique strain.
Christian Arroyo has been dealing with a jammed thumb he suffered during the Athletics series. The infielder is available off the bench but Cora would prefer to stay away from him.
