WHAT’S UP
The Red Sox will look to snap a three-game losing streak in Game 2 of the day/night doubleheader on Saturday night. Boston dropped the series opener, 5-4 to the Mets from Fenway Park.
The Sox will turn to left-hander James Paxton to be the stopper and end the losing streak. Paxton is coming off his worst outing last weekend against the Cubs, where he allowed a season-high six runs in three innings.
Over his last eight outings dating back to May 31, Paxton owns a 3.00 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, .190 opponent batting average. He’s only allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his last 11 appearances.
PRE-GAME NOTES
The Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello on the Paternity List on Saturday. Bello flew to the Dominican Republic awaiting the birth of his child. Boston will reshuffle its rotation with Bello out for a few days.
“A lot of traveling the last 48 hours,” Alex Cora said. “San Francisco to here, here to the Dominican. It has been a lot so we’ll push him back to Wednesday and go from there.”
Justin Garza was recalled from Triple-A Worcester ahead of the resumption of Friday night’s content against the Mets.
The Sox will add WooSox right-hander Norwith Gudiño as the 27th man for the day/night doubleheader on Saturday. While with Triple-A Worcester, Gudiño is 4-4 with a 5.54 ERA, 30 strike outs and 1.63 WHIP in 20 games (eight starts).
