According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Boston Celtics have signed Charles Bassey to a 10-day contract. Bassey spent a portion of Summer League with the Celtics this past offseason, but did not join the team for training camp.
He was signed and waived by the Atlanta Hawks before the start of the 2025-26 campaign. However, Bassey has spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies (one 10-day contract, two games played) and Philadelphia 76ers (two 10-day contracts, one game played) this season.
The 25-year-old, 6-foot-10 big man was drafted 53rd overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2021 NBA Draft. He holds career averages of 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 116 career NBA games (while shooting 62.6% from the floor).
BSJ Analysis
Just like when they signed Dalano Banton a couple of weeks ago, this signing is part of Boston's plan to duck the tax this year.
Though it initially seemed they would jump right to signing guys to standard deals by this point, they chose to go with an extra 10-day contract period. This time around, it's Bassey who got the nod.
It was just Summer League, but Bassey looked good in Las Vegas. He was the most impactful player on the floor for the Celtics at times, dominating the glass and serving as a dominant defensive presence in the paint.
Under normal circumstances, Bassey would likely only earn playing time if the Celtics were part of a blowout. However, with the injury to Nikola Vucevic, perhaps there's a pathway to Bassey playing some spot minutes here and there.
That said, Joe Mazzulla may prefer to roll with rookie Amari Williams if the team needed some additional center minutes.
