Patriots Camp Report 08.06.25: Maye, offense show well in joint practice with Commanders taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(USA Today Network)

FOXBOROUGH - Practice No. 12 of 2025 is in the books, this time a joint session with the Commanders. Let's run down all you need to know: all the stats, 3 up/down, 1-on-1s, and odds and ends:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Patriots' offense had a very good day: Giardi watched the defense against Jayden Daniels, so he'll be writing that up separately. But I thought the Patriots' offense looked very sharp against the Commanders' defense, especially in the red zone. For team periods, Drake Maye was 14 of 20 (with drops from TreVeyon Henderson - a TD - and Demario Douglas), 3 passing touchdowns, a scramble touchdown, one sack and an interception on Maye's final drive.

It was a game situation - ball at the opponent's 25-yard line with 45 seconds left. On the drive, Maye hit Hunter Henry for 7 yards, and Kayshon Boutte for 7 yards before throwing incomplete to Stefon Diggs on a corner fade. On second and goal from the 9, Douglas was wide open on a slant but veteran LB Bobby Wagner read it, tipped it up and Everett's Mike Sainristil picked it off in the end zone. That's at least the second time the defense got its hands on that pass (Khyiris Tonga tipped another last week). On the three red zone drives before that, Maye was 5 of 9 with TDs to Diggs, Boutte and Mack Hollins, a TD run when a hole opened up. Another end zone pass to Diggs drew a pass interference penalty.

Josh Dobbs was also very sharp, going 17 of 20 with 4 TDs, including the play of the day when in the same game situation, Dobbs only needed one play to hit Hollins on a 25-yard TD down the right sideline that the WR hauled in with just his right arm.

One thing to keep in mind, the Commanders don't have a very strong secondary and not much in the way of pass rush (Von Miller spent his 1-on-1 reps just running up the field). The Commanders' defense overall ranked 23rd in DVOA last season (20th against the pass), and are projected to be 17th overall this year.

But this was the Patriots' best offensive day in a little bit.

Will Campbell mostly holds his own: The first-round pick played very well in the 11-on-11s, including a big block on old friend Deatrich Wise to spring a big Henderson run. He didn't give up a pressure in team periods that I could see.

One-on-ones were a mixed bag in three reps against Wise. The first I had as a draw as Campbell was strongly initially, but Wise closed out the rep well using his 36-inch arms to control the rookie. Both players had their moments. On the second, Campbell would have been called for a hold in a game, as Wise started up the field but cut inside. Campbell hooked him to the ground with a hold. Wise ripped Campbell (not to the ground like Keion White did the first day) and easily went around him.

Vrabel gets involved in scuffle: There were two scuffles involving the Patriots' offense and Commanders' defense. The first one was minor, but the second involved TreVeyon Henderson against a Commanders defensive lineman after Henderson picked up the pressure. They got after it on the ground, Will Campbell jumped in and then so did Mike Vrabel, who had blood on his face in the aftermath. Both teams came onto the field. Rhamondre Stevenson was hot as the interaction got broken up.

ONE-ON-ONES

Jared Wilson looked really good against a good Commanders DT group. Wilson beat Dorance Armstrong and Clelin Ferrell, drew with Daron Payne.

Ben Brown got dusted by old friend Carl Davis.

Cole Strange got undressed by Sheldon Day before beating Jalyn Holmes.

Garrett Bradbury was beaten handily on his first two reps against Eddie Goldman.

Mike Onwenu split with Payne, then beat Armstrong and Norell Pollard.

Von Miller just ran up the field and was kind of embarrassing. He gave up easy wins to Jacobs twice, and Marcus Bryant.

PASSING FROM GIARDI

7-on-7. Had Drake Maye finish 3-of-6, and Joshua Dobbs 4-of-6.
Maye:
-Hits Diggs on a stop vs rookie Trey Amos
- Misses Diggs in the right flat. Ball nearly intercepted by Sainsristil. Diggs didn't look particularly quick getting into the route and managed only to get one hand on the ball. Not a good throw.
- Scramble. Maye rolls to his right and dumps it down to Diggs in the flat. Not sure he would have had all that time to throw with an actual pass rush.
Dobbs:
-Missed Henderson on a circle route coming out of the backfield. The ball is behind him. He was open and ready to do damage.
- To Douglas in the right flat (out of the slot).
- Quick out to Chism working against a linebacker.
Maye:
-No one is open. Rolls right and throws it away.
- Checkdown to Henderson
- Finds Hollins in the back of the end zone. He tries to one-hand it (could have gotten two on it) and can't corral it.
Dobbs:
-Throws back shoulder to Baker. The ball jarred out by the corner. Incomplete.
- Hits Jennings alone in the right flat. Another play that may not have happened if there had been a pass rush.
- Checkdown to Larison in the left flat.

TOP PLAY

Dobbs' 25-yard TD touchdown pass to Hollins, who reeled it in with just his right arm against CB Bobby Price.

FOUR UP

WR Demario Douglas: Had three big catches from Maye in team. He was also open on Maye's TD. Seemed to get separation all day long against a shaky Washington secondary.

LG Jared Wilson: Went 2-0-1 in 1-on-1s and didn't give up much of anything in team.

QB Drake Maye: Outside of the interception - they might need to address his arm angle as this seems to be a problem - he was very sharp finding open receivers all over the field. Was really feeding Douglas, Henry and Hollins.

Maye and Josh McDaniels were killing the Commanders with the classic Patriots playaction pop pass. They were wide open all day.

WR Mack Hollins: Showed why the Patriots signed him as a big red zone target as he caught 4 of 5 passes from Maye and a touchdown.

THREE DOWN

C Garrett Bradbury: Had an awful opening team series where he allowed a run through for a tackle for a loss on second down, and then allowed a sack to Payne on third down. Also had a poor screen block. Then went to the second team for a while while Ben Brown got first-team reps.

G Cole Strange: Went back to second-team guard from center in this practice and has a bad loss in 1-on-1s and gave up some pressure in team.

WR Kyle Williams: He's not bad or anything, but he's not getting much attention from Maye and was just 1 of 2 with Dobbs. Seems to be struggling a little.

ODDS AND ENDS

  • Normally, the joint practices feature spirited passing 1-on-1s between the receivers and cornerbacks, but those did not happen at the request of the Commanders, who are a little thin at receiver.
  • Alex Austin had a big pass breakup of Jayden Daniels to end his situational drive on 4th and 7.
  • Morgan Moses did not take part again, Vrabel said he's dealing with something. Demontrey Jacobs and Marcus Bryant split RT duties and keep flopping around LT at times as they battle out the swing OT spot.
  • Kyle Dugger spent a lot of time with the starters but Craig Woodson also got some time.
  • Andy Borregales was 4 for 4 from 33, 40, 44 and 52. Parker Romo missed from 40. Borregales hasn't missed since starting camp 4 of 8.
  • New England's top kickoff unit featured Elijah Ponder, Monty Rice, Lan Larison and Truman Jones for names you wouldn't normally expect.
  • Robert Kraft, Jon Bon Jovi, Jayson Tatum, Devin McCourty and Danny Amendola were among those in attendance.
