Patriots Camp Report 08.12.24: Mayo takes his foot off the gas in advance of Eagles joint practice taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGH - Practice No. 13 of 2024 is in the books; let's run down all you need to know: all the stats, 3 up/down, and odds and ends:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Patriots dial things back: As expected, after going full pads on Sunday and the Eagles in town for a joint practice on Tuesday, Jerod Mayo elected to dial things back as the players were not in pads for the first time in six practices and the session was only 90 minutes.

I have to say, I've been pleasantly surprised by Mayo's on-field decisions during his first camp. I figured the "relationship" guy would take it easy on the players in camp, but that has not been the case. He's been harder on them as far as padded practices and physicality than Bill Belichick was in his later years. We'll see if that translates into anything - possibly a quicker start - in the regular season.

Overall, this was not much of a practice. Some red zone work.

Hunter Henry absent again: Tight end Hunter Henry has not been visible on the field since stretching on Sunday. Efforting to find out what's going on. He appeared to get dinged late last week in practice.

Eagles will be a big litmus test: The Patriots have a great opportunity with a contender coming to town for a practice and the second preseason game. Nick Sirrianni's offense is a good scheme with a lot of talent. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is installing his great scheme with a talented group, especially on the defensive line. This is a pretty big test for the Mayo/Van Pelt regime. This has a chance to be pretty ugly for the Patriots. If the flipside happens and they hold their own, they should generate some confidence from that.

QB STATS

Team periods

Jacoby Brissett: 4 for 7, TD — (3 for 3, 1 for 4, TD)
Drake Maye: 1 for 4, TD — (0 for 1, sack; 1 for 3, TD)

* Milton was 1 of 5 with an INT in an opportunity period.

7 on 7 red zone

Brissett: 2 of 5, TD
Maye: 3 of 6, 2 TDs

Note: I do not have the number of reps that some other writers have because I do not count when the offense is "working off cards." Those are plays when an assistant coach brings out a play on a card and shows it to one side of the ball. They are not running their own plays, so since there are so many x-factors — including the receiver running the right route and blockers executing correctly — so I do not count those reps.

MAYE REPORT

Antonio Gibson LT, stuffed
Raekwon McMillan comes unblocked up middle, sack
Hasty good run
Incomplete screen, nearly picked off by Ximines

Layden Robinson false start
Hasty RG run

TOP PLAYS

Brissett TD pass in team to Reagor as he came from other side on backline, beat Christian Gonzalez.

ONE UP

WR Demario Douglas: He's been a beast the last few days a full go.

ONE DOWN

The entire team: Thought it was a pretty sloppy practice overall. Defense had to run two laps, the offense one. Multiple penalties.

QUICK HITS

  • No changes on the offensive line.
  • Alex Austin and Marco Wilson continued to rotate at CB. Seems like Wilson is slightly ahead.
