FOXBOROUGH - Practice No. 12 of 2024 is in the books; let's run down all you need to know: all the stats, 3 up/down, 1-on-1 pass rushes, and odds and ends:
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
No changes to the depth chart after first preseason game: If the Patriots were going to make some tweaks to the depth chart/QB snaps after the first preseason game, they didn't do it for Sunday's practice in front of season-ticket holders. Drake Maye was still working with the second- and third-string lines. The offensive lines were still the same with, from left to right, Vederian Lowe, Sidy Sow, David Andrews, Mike Onwenu and Chuks Okorafor. Second unit was Calvin Anderson, Layden Robinson, Nick Leverett, Michael Jordan and Caeden Wallace. The only change on the line was Liam Fornadel moving from guard to third-string center in place of Atonio Mafi. Marco Wilson got the start at CB opposite Christian Gonzalez with Shaun Wade as the nickel with Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones (still) out of practice.
Mayo still pushing the pads: Normally, the first practice after the preseason is a light affair in shells, but Jerod Mayo had the team in full pads for 7th time and fifth practice in a row. Basically, since it was legal to go full pads, Mayo has elected to do just that all but one practice. Perhaps it was because the Eagles joint practice is Tuesday. Mayo may go light tomorrow in advance of that. Today's practice was not quite jogthrough, but it wasn't full speed either. Even in 1-on-1 pass rush drills, it seemed like the veterans were only going hard for a step or two. The team periods were heavy on situations, like two-minute and red zone. It seemed like they were just going over stuff rather than competing. A lot of pulling up in the secondary. There were NFL referees on hand, which made calling completions and incompletions a lot easier, but those refs didn't have a ton to do today.
Slye makes a move in the kicking competition: Joey Slye, who got the only field-goal attempt against the Panthers (good from 42), got the only situational field goal in team, which was good from 53. In the final period of practice, there was a kicking competition with loud music and the other players making noise and trying to distract the kickers. Slye was 3 of 4, Chad Ryland was 2 of 4. They both made from 38 and 45. Both missed from 49. Slye made from 53, and Ryland missed. Both his misses were wide right.

TOP PLAYS
JaQuae Jackson had another double move big play where he torched Mikey Victor in 1 on 1s.
Marco Wilson owned Ja'Lynn Polk in press off the line. Didn't let him go anywhere.
Both Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett had great twisting completions off boot action. Maye's to Polk was a beauty rolling to his left.
THREE UP
WR Demario Douglas: Caught all 5 of his attempts as he took off the red jersey.
QB Jacoby Brissett: Was in total command during the situational stuff. It was night and day with where Maye is.
OT Chuks Okorafor: Was 2 for 2 in 1-on-1 reps over Judon and Ximines.
FOUR DOWN
K Chad Ryland: This is not trending well for him.
WR Ja'Lynn Polk: Thought this was a rough day for him overall with a drop out of bounds and not getting off press coverage on one rep.
QB Drake Maye: Was really scuffling at times in the situational stuff.
CB Christian Gonzalez: Gave up all three receptions in 1-on-1s.
QUICK HITS
- Matthew Judon took his first 1 on 1 reps of camp. While he lost both to Chuks Okorafor and Caeden Wallace, I did not think he went all out. Basically, he worked on his get off with two steps and shut it down.
- Ja'Whaun Bentley was back at practice with a small contraption on the left elbow he injured last practice.
- No Hunter Henry today.
- Jerod Mayo called the team at one point during a team period and seemed to lay into them pretty good.
