Patriots Camp Report 07.30.24: Without Matthew Judon, defense flexes on offense, Drake Maye taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGHPractice No. 6 of 2024 is in the books, let's run down all you need to know: all the stats, 1-on-1 pass rush charts, 3 up/down, and odds and ends:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Matthew Judon not seen: A day after throwing a public temper tantrum, Judon was not on the field. In fact, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reported Judon was not at the facility at all today.

Well, that's not good.

On another contract front, Robert Kraft (sporting a bandage on his left cheek) was seen conversing with Davon Godchaux during practice.

Drake Maye has third-straight rough practice: The third overall pick was 3 of 9 with sack, a rehuddle, and snap exchange fumble in team. He really scuffled in the main team period (1 of 6, the fumble). He's thinking a lot at this point, not trusting his initial read. Appears he's at the point of rookie overload/brain lock. Of course, it should be pointed out that he's working with the second team, and with David Andrews out, Atonio Mafi is the second-string center and he's terrible. Every shotgun snap is an adventure, and they even fumbled a center exchange. Unless Jake Andrews is expected back soon, it's time to end this experiment and sign a real center somewhere. This is ridiculous.

Offensive line wins the 1-on-1 day again: The Patriots switched things up the 1-on-1s today as they went double-barrel at the same time (backups on one field, starters on the other). That's good (starters get more reps against each other) and bad (I don't get to watch some of the up-and-comers as much, like Layden Robinson).

But, in any event, the offensive line won 12-5-6 with Sidy Sow (3-0-1) and Mike Onwenu (4-1) the most impressive. On the flip side, Deatrich Wise was 0-3.

Coming....

Note: I do not have the number of reps that some other writers have because I do not count when the offense is "working off cards." Those are plays when an assistant coach literally brings out a play on a card and shows it to one side of the ball. They are not running their own plays so since there are so many x-factors — including the receiver running the right route, and blockers executing correctly — so I do not count those reps.

MAYE REPORT

Dialing down on the top draft pick in team periods.

This was Maye's series in the first team session:

Complete, playaction boot right to TE Mitchell Wilcox
Kevin Harris run LT 4 yards
JaMycal Hasty run stuffed
Sack by Osahne Ximines - playaction, held the ball
Antonio Gibson run to RT, 2 yards
Hasty run to LT, stuffed

Second series, red zone:

Stevenson run left tackle for 4 yards
Incomplete in end zone to KJ Osborn after a pumpfake, out of the end zone
Harris run LT for 2 yards
Rehuddle as it appeared Boutte and Reagor were lined up wrong
Complete to Boutte on a quick out

Third series:

Incomplete to Wilcox in double coverage, Raekwon McMillan PBU
Incomplete to Javon Baker on a rollout after poor Mafi snap
Maye/Mafi fumble center exchange, recovered by defense
Incomplete to Baker, Marco Wilson PBU
Hasty run LT, stuffed
Incomplete to Polk
Complete to Polk on a low crosser for 5 yards
Hasty run over RT
Incomplete to Baker, Shaun Wade PBU

Defense was really hooting and hollering at the offense as Maye struggled. Offense had to do pushups at the conclusion.

HANDS TEAM

Fumbles: Maye/Mafi
Drops: Smith-Schuster
Pass breakups: Joshuah Bledsoe, Marco Wilson, Raekwon McMillan, Shaun Wade
Interception: None.
Sacks: Ximines, Josh Uche 2.

ONE-ON-ONE REPORT

Dominating win:

In the final rep, and with Mike Onwenu having won his first 7 reps of camp, Keion White quickly beat Onwenu inside to give him his first loss.

Noteworthy: Calvin Anderson had a really good rep against Keion White where Anderson really attack him after the snap.

Also, it should be noted and was interesting to watch OL coach Scott Peters talking to each of his linemen before their rep, almost preparing them for their "fight." Normally the conversation happens after, if at all, because the line coaches are trying to get as many reps as possible.

TOP PLAYS

Three nominees, two from Jacoby Brissett and one from Joe Milton.

In red zone 7 on 7, he put up a nice ball to the corner that Ja'Lynn Polk caught for a TD over Marco Wilson.

And on the first play of team red zone, Brissett threw a perfect skinny post to Hunter Henry for a TD over Joshuah Bledsoe

Milton had a nifty read-option TD to Smith-Schuster in team red zone that totally faked me out and I almost missed the pass.

THREE UP

LG Sidy Sow: Is 5-0-2 after the first two days of 1-on-1s. Seems to be really on point this year.

RG Mike Onwenu: The reigning champion suffered his first loss of camp, but is still 7-1 and all seven of his wins have been impressive. Not many close ones.

QB Joe Milton: I know this is going to get taken out of context and you have to keep in mind that almost every play Milton is asked to run is a read-option and much different than the other QBs, but if you didn't know who the QBs were, you would think Milton was the better of the rookie QBs ... but he is NOT. He's running something very simple, but it's working for him.

THREE DOWN

Pass rush: They are 12-33-15 so far against a rebuilding offensive line.

QB Drake Maye: He needs a day off, and a mental reset. For the first time, I had the thought (not the opinion ... just a thought), that maybe pushing him into No. 2 reps so early was the wrong decision.

DE Deatrich Wise: The veteran was 0-3 in 1-on-1s but has been putting up sacks in team periods with regularity.

QUICK HITS

  • Punt returns got work today with Marcus Jones and Pop Douglas getting most of the work.
  • Douglas was in a red jersey today, which is progress but still limited.
  • Seems like Marco Wilson and Alex Austin are competing for the 4th CB spot. Now that I think of it, I haven't notice Jonathan Jones much in a couple days.
  • Devin McCourty was at practice.
  • Patriots are running outside zone, but they will mix it up. Saw a pin/pull power today.
  • Running game was mostly solid. Making progress there too.
  • There were more operational issues with the offense again, and it frustrated Brissett. Looked like Polk was lined up in the wrong place and Brissett seemed to take his displeasure out on WRs coach Tyler Hughes. Boutte and Reagor also lined up wrong on another occasion.
