FOXBOROUGH — Practice No. 5 of 2024 is in the books, let's run down all you need to know: all the stats, 1-on-1 pass rush charts, 3 up/down, and odds and ends:
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Matthew Judon's contract squabble becomes messy at practice: Giardi has it covered here. All I'll say about it is this shouldn't be in full view of the media and the fans. It's a bad look all around.
Offense makes progress (except for the rookie QBs): The first-team offense led by Jacoby Brissett (with Caeden Wallace at LT and Chuks Okorafor at RT) looked like a professional outfit today for the first time in camp. Brissett was 8 of 9, bad plays were at a minimum. When rookies Drake Maye and Joe Milton was under center, it was a different story with negative plays, penalties and turnovers. It just shows you the experience difference and it matters. Natural talent and ceilings are just a small part of playing QB in the NFL. Both have much to learn but that is what camp is for.
Offensive line dominates pass rush in first round of 1-on-1s: I'll take lines I never thought I would type for $1,000, Alex. 21-7-9 says it all. But the defense usually rebounds after a bad film session, so this should be fun. All the numbers are down below for members.

QB STATS
Team periods
Jacoby Brissett: 8 for 9 — (2 for 2, 4 for 4, 2 for 3)
Drake Maye: 1 for 4, 2 sacks — (0-0, sack; 1 for 3, 1 for 1, sack)

7 on 7 from Giardi
Brissett
To Rhamondre Stevenson on a quick out.
Brissett drops it into the bucket for Tyquan Thornton on a go route over Marco Wilson.
Quick out to JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Hunter Henry settles in the open area versus a zone.
Javon Baker lays out on a corner route but cannot hang on to the ball when he hits the ground. When Baker is even, he's leaving — great late burst.
Safety Dell Pettus with a pass breakup on a crosser to Henry.
Maye
La'Michael Pettway drops a well-thrown slant.
A check-down to tight Jacob Warren
Kyle Dugger intercepts a throw along the sideline that was high and behind tight end Mitchell Wilcox.
Short completion to Kayshon Boutte
Throws high on a skinny post to Boutte
Rookie wide receiver David Wallis and Maye were not on the same page on a throw over the middle of the field. Wallis broke out, and Maye threw in. The two safeties were the closest to catching the ball.
Note: I do not have the number of reps that some other writers have because I do not count when the offense is "working off cards." Those are plays when an assistant coach literally brings out a play on a card and shows it to one side of the ball. They are not running their own plays so since there are so many x-factors — including the receiver running the right route, and blockers executing correctly — so I do not count those reps.
MAYE REPORT
Dialing down on the top draft pick in team periods.
This was Maye's series in the first team session:
Harris run, stuffed by Jeremiah Pharms
Harris big run over right tackle
JaMychal Hasty stuffed over RT by Oshane Ximines
Bust sack by Ximines
Second series:
Stevenson big run down left sidelines showing some burst
Complete to Baker
Incomplete to TE Mitchell Wilcox. Could have been catchable but a little wide
Incomplete to Smith-Schuster thrown into the turf not close
Incomplete to TE Jacob Warren, not close on a rollout. Defense showed all-out blitz and came. Maye just sprinted right and thew it away, basically.
Third series:
Incomplete to Wilcox
Toss to Hasty high and behind hi for a stuff
Harris run middle
Sacked by Trysten Hill
HANDS TEAM
Fumbles: Charles Turner/Joe Milton
Drops: La'Michael Pettway 2.
Pass breakups: None.
Interception: Dugger (Maye)
Sacks: Ximines, Hill
ONE-ON-ONE REPORT

Dominating wins:
Anfernee Jennings smoked Vederian Lowe with quickness.
Jotham Russell dusted Tyrone Wheatley with speed.
Mike Onwenu stuffed Josh Uche.
Caeden Wallace lost a close battle to Uche, drew with Anfernee Jennings, beat John Morgan and Keion White. Pretty good day for the rookie. And didn't look out of place in team at left tackle.

THREE UP
QB Jacoby Brissett: The first padded practice of camp is usually run heavy to get guys going a bit. Today was no exception and Brissett showed off his knowledge of the offense by getting the Patriots out of bad runs, and into good ones. There was only one stuffed run when he was under center, but multiple with Drake Maye and Joe Milton. Brissett was especially excited about a check he made for a big run by Stevenson. Oh, and Brissett was 8 for 9.
RG Mike Onwenu: Was a dominating 3-0 in 1-on-1s with wins over Keion White and Josh Uche (twice). On one rep, Ownenu completely shut down Uche. Made him look like a 5-year-old trying to get past his father.
RG Layden Robinson: Rookie was impressive with wins over Sam Roberts, Deatrich Wise and Armon Watts.
THREE DOWN
Pass rush: Without Christian Barmore, Matthew Judon and the benefit of scheme, the pass rush looked very pedestrian as they went 7-21-9 against a rebuilding offensive line.
QB Drake Maye: This is two days in a row for him as he struggles with the nuances under center and reading the defense/pass rush. This was going to happen. Lets see him rebound. There will be better days.
DT Daniel Ekuale: Looked to get the call to start in place of Barmore and he went 0 for 2 in 1-on-1s.
QUICK HITS
- Patriots worked on the new kickoff return with Jalen Reagor, Marcus Jones and Ja'Lynn Polk getting the returns. Man, it looks funny. But I think there are going to be a ton of big plays. Should be exciting.
- Christian Gonzalez, Marcus Jones and Marco Wilson were the starting cornerbacks.
- No changes on the offensive line.
