The Dynasty Quickie Recap: Episode 4 - Spygate taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

Apple TV

Wasn't going to do this but decided to have a little fun with The Dynasty on Apple TV. These aren't going to be comprehensive reviews, but quickie recaps via categories. What I have so far (you can make suggestions for new ones in the comments):

I will say, I think Patriots fans are going to love it. It's really meant for you guys. The direction and editing are outstanding. I have a few issues with it, as we'll get into, but it's really well done and worth the money. If you're interested in purchasing (if you haven't seen Ted Lasso and Black Bird - Hijack and Silo were solid as well - it's a good excuse), following this link to purchase will help BSJ

EPISODE 3: BORROWED TIME

Synopsis

Spygate ... Randy Moss ... the perfect regular season ... the heartbreak against the Giants. (Length: 50 minutes)

Best Quote(s)

Bedard:

Now why would that be, Ernie? If you guys did nothing wrong, and really didn't break any rules, why would you have to take it to the grave with you?

Why the two orders, Col. Jessup?

WHO ORDERED THE CODE RED?!!

Giardi: "Holy shit, like, this is gonna be fun. I had no clue what was about to happen." - Josh McDaniels on Randy Moss going nuts in the opener and then, of course, hello Spygate.

"Nobody ever thinks that - when they reach the top - they're going to change. Nobody thinks that. But they do." - Michael Holley

"He doesn't like to be called out, period. And he was called out by the Commissioner. The media. And he was called out by Eric Mangini and the Jets." - Holley

"I appreciate his killer instinct. I'm a bad motherf******, too." - Randy Moss talking about Belichick.

I Didn't Know That

Bedard: Jonathan Kraft recounting the post-Super Bowl locker room: "I'm watching guys throw up and cry on the floor."

Giardi: I forgot that Moss got his fingertips on that pass. I remember him being close but I didn't remember him touching the ball. So close yet so far

That Was Cool

Bedard: This, right into "Another One Bites The Dust."

Giardi: Randy Moss hung up on Belichick when he was traded to New England. I've been there before. Someone calls that you don't expect, and then you think one of your friends is screwing with you. Remind me to tell you the Tom Brady Sr. story from around Tom's entry into free agency. My goodness. Anyway, that was amusing. Plus, I assume it was a late-night call because Randy said he was in the club.

Goosebumps Moment

Bedard: The entire Tyree sequence, from Bruschi talking about one more stop for 19-0, Brady's f-bombs, Bruschi's saying he's been on that sideline before and his final look of lament. Just great.

Giardi: Brady exhorting his teammates on the sidelines during the regular season game versus the Chargers. "We are not finished. We ain't done. We're beating their asses for 60 minutes."

LOL Moment

Bedard: Are they shooting a The Shining reboot at Gillette? This would be Robyn Glaser, now righthand to Jerod Mayo, reenacting her post-Spygate stroll to help the NFL destroy the tapes.

Giardi: "I interpreted it incorrectly. I was wrong," Belichick said when being questioned by Armen Ketayian in a sitdown about Spygate. I mean, it was in plain English in the rule book. So yes, I laughed at the answer then and now.

Biggest Nitpick(s)

Bedard

No Eric Mangini?

No one would agree to talk involved in the taping? Matt Estrella?

You had Mike Martz in the last episode ... he had no comment on the alleged taping of the Rams' walkthrough? That seems like a Kraft-friendly omission. Just left it with their denial and the Herald retraction, but we all know that's not what the Rams and Steelers think.

Giardi: What the hell happened with the offensive line in the Super Bowl? Yes, Strahan, Tuck, and Osi were legit, but that was an excellent group in front of Brady. They got their lunch money taken that night and were stuffed into the locker after getting an atomic wedgie.

I Wished They Talked About

Bedard: Apparently Wes Welker didn't play for the 2007 Patriots. Had zero role. It was all Moss.

Giardi: How do we not mention Mangini was escorted out of the building after taking the Jets job? And that Belichick told him not to take said job? Did that lay the groundwork for the whistle-blowing later?

Belichick Watch

Bedard: Belichick, who again was barely in the episode, had nothing to add on Spygate, but Michael Holley and Scott Pioli were good on the larger ramifications.

"After multiple titles, there's hubris. To Belichick, rules don't apply to him." - Holley.

"Bill was very close to Eric. And his very normal human reaction was a feeling of betrayal. And he distanced himself from those of us that were closest to him." - Pioli.

Giardi: "That's all in the past. I don't have anything to add to that." - Belichick stonewalling the question from the producer about Spygate. True to form. Otherwise, largely absent from the episode. I'm getting ready to put his face on the side of a milk carton.

Kraft's Moment of Glory

Bedard: "I protected Bill. I talked with the lawyers from the NFL office. I said, 'Look, fine Bill, fine us. Do whatever you got to do but don't suspend him.' We tried to protect his reputation." - Kraft.

Giardi: What Greg said. Also, Jonathan Kraft on the Boston Herald story, "We're going to own your paper pretty soon. And if the paper was worth owning, we would have owned their newspaper. But it wasn't something worth owning." DAMN. The Herald ran an apology but as JK noted, "The damage was already done."

Patriots Hardo Moment

Bedard: So many in this episode during 16-0, but this was it for me.

Giardi: "Look, I don't want to say anything about this Jets thing. Ok? Just shut the fuck up. Just worry about ourselves, our team. Everybody else is going to say what they want to say. We can't control that. But we can control what we're talking about and what we're doing." - Belichick leading up to the game post-Spygate (beating the Chargers).

Episode MVP

Bedard: Bruschi, again. Everyone is going to say Randy Moss but while he is entertaining as all get out, he didn't really bring a whole lot new to the table. Tedy just keeps bringing it. He's definitely series MVP to this point.

Giardi: I could say Moss but it's Bruschi. Being as open and honest as you can be.

Lingering Questions/Comments

Bedard

No mention that all teams were warned like three times about taping signals?

How about an appearance from 16-year-old Chris Gasper?

Giardi

Is Pioli a little annoyed that Brady was in New York in the lead-up to the Super Bowl? Sounded that way.

So I get no Wes Welker, a Hall of Famer, in my book, but I'm getting soliloquies from Glazer? Bruh.

Also, the Meadowlands director of security must be living in an alternate reality. There have been stories talking about the level of depravity that was taking place in that stadium. Spare me.
