All you need to know, in quickie form, about the Red Sox’ 3-2 win over the Yankees, complete with BSJ analysis and insight:
HEADLINES
The Red Sox lineup looked lifeless all game with the exception of a Justin Turner solo blast in the second inning.
The Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt held the Sox offense to just four hits over 5 1/3 innings giving up one run (Turner homer) no walks and four strikeouts. He held the Sox at bay, but Boston would grind away at-bats against the Yankees bullpen.
Brayan Bello was excellent on Sunday night tossing seven strong innings. He only allowed two runs, a two-run single by Jose Trevino that hit the second base bag and kicked into center field.
Bello gave up three hits in total, waking two and striking out three. Over his final three innings, he allowed just two batters to reach base. Anthony Rizzo (0-for-3) with a leadoff walk to start the sixth, and Trevino (1-for-4), who reached thanks to a throwing error by Rafael Devers. It was Devers' seventh error of the season.
TURNING POINT
Trailing by a run entering the eighth inning, the Red Sox were able to tie the game. Kiké Hernández led off the inning with a single into left field. The Sox infielder would advance to second thanks in part to Gleyber Torres letting the throw from left field get by him.
Following a walk to catcher Reese McGuire, Pablo Reyes laid down a textbook bunt, advancing both runners. Jarren Duran then hit a ground ball to the right side, Hernández scored from third tying the game 2-2.
After Kenley Jansen retired the Yankees 1-2-3 in the ninth, the Sox would take the lead in the 10th inning.
Triston Casas moved the ghost runner, Adam Duvall over to third with a ground out. Hernández then slapped a ball into left field, scoring Duvall, giving Boston a 3-2 lead.
Chris Martin was summoned for the save in the 10th inning. Martin would slam the door on the Yankees getting Trevino and Anthony Volpe to strike out to end the game.
UP
The Red Sox bullpen was fantastic in relief of Bello. Nick Pivetta, who continues to be a bright spot, threw 12 pitches retiring the Yankees in the eighth inning. Jansen only needed 10 pitches in the ninth and Martin fired 13 pitches at the Yanks, grabbing two strikeouts in the process.
DOWN
The Red Sox were a victim of bad luck early on in the game. With Duran on at first, Verdugo hit a rope to the right side. As Duran was running to second, the ball hit his cleat, forcing him out.
Masataka Yoshida struggled again going 0-for-4 in the series finale. He ended the series 0-for-11 and will now look to get back on track this coming week at home.
UP NEXT
The Red Sox will head back to Fenway Park after going .500 on their latest road trip. The Rockies will come to town and open a three-game series on Monday night.
