BSJ Game Report: Red Sox 11, Blue Jays 5 - Sox start strong, blow past Jays to take series finale

Sox offense proved to be too much for Jays: The Red Sox capped off their series finale against the Blue Jays in style with a big, 11-5, victory on Thursday at Fenway Park.

The Sox secured 16 hits on the night while picking up their sixth win in a row.

Rafael Devers highlighted the offense with three hits and four RBIs. The Sox third baseman slammed his 150th career home run in the eighth inning to blow the game open with a two-run shot. Matasaka Yoshida, Jarren Duran and Justin Turner also compiled three hits for Boston.

Brayan Bello kept the Blue Jays at bay as the right-hander allowed four runs on six hits in five innings of work to earn the victory. Bello struck out five and walked only one Blue Jays batter in a solid start for No. 66.

Toronto got a less-than-stellar start from Kevin Gausman, who allowed eight runs on 10 hits in just 3.1 innings. Gausman entered the matchup with momentum as one of the hottest pitchers in the AL, but left with another loss to his name.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. starred for the Blue Jays as the slugger concluded with two RBIs to lead the team.

TURNING POINT

Yoshida went yard: Yoshida got the Sox on the right side of the scoreboard during the first inning with his sixth home run of the season.

Yoshida's hit streak stretched to 14 games with the homer. The outfielder added a couple more to finish the night with three, putting him in a four-way tie for the team lead.

TWO UP

Sox ran wild early: A five-run second inning powered the Red Sox on Friday as the hosts jumped out to a 6-0 lead in a hurry. All nine batters got a chance against Gausman, who threw over 50 pitches in his first two innings of action.

Devers was the star of the frame, smacking a double off the right field wall that scored a pair of runs.

Triston Casas, Reese McGuire, Turner, Duran and Yoshida added base knocks in the frame.

Kike Hernandez shows up defensively: Although the Sox shortstop didn't record a hit in the victory, Hernandez had a strong game on the field with a couple of nice plays.

First, in the sixth inning, Hernandez combined an impressive barehanded grab with a strong throw after Whit Merrifield's ground ball deflected off of Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino.

Then an inning later, Hernandez stretched out to grab a Kevin Kiermaier line drive.

ONE DOWN

Guerrero Jr. could not be contained: The Blue Jays offense has some potent weapons, but none more so than Guerrero Jr. 

The Toronto first baseman rounded led the visitors with two hits, including a home run in the fourth inning that traveled over 440 feet.

The solo shot upped his home run total to seven on the season.

"We're playing good baseball," manager Alex Cora said to reporters. "Offensively, we knew we were going to be good and pitching-wise, we're getting there."

The Sox will travel to Philadelphia for a three-game series against the Phillies beginning on Friday. Chris Sale (2-2, 6.75) will start for Boston in Game 1, opposite Zack Wheeler (3-1, 3.86).
