BSJ Game Report: Panthers 4, Bruins 3 -- Cats come from behind to steal win in OT

Everything you need to know from the Bruins' 4-3 loss to the Panthers, with BSJ insight and analysis:

HEADLINES

Panthers claw back to hand B's second loss in a row: If you blinked, you might have missed the Panthers, 4-3, come-from-behind victory over the Bruins.

Sasha Barkov beat the clock with a goal with 1.4 seconds left in regulation, then Sam Reinhart scored 17 seconds into overtime to stun the Bruins in Sunrise.

David Pastrnak scored with 48 seconds remaining in the third to put Boston out in front, 3-2, but the lead was short-lived as Florida evened out the season series with the win.

Craig Smith and Charlie Coyle secured the first two goals for the B's, while Jeremy Swayman (33 saves) lost his first road contest in six games in the defeat.

The Bruins' power play struggled against the Panthers as it went 0-for-4, and never looked comfortable throughout the outing. Boston has one power play goal in its past nine man-advantage opportunities.

To make matters worse for the Bruins, Trent Frederic left the game in the first period and did not return. Frederic appeared to suffer a lower-body injury.

Smith snatched an errant breakout pass from the Panthers and lit the lamp to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 16:50 of the first. Smith's third of the season followed a four-minute B's power play that only produced one scoring chance.

Brandon Montour redirected a shot from Barkov on the rush to even the score, 1-1, midway through the second period. Montour pushed his point streak to nine games with the strike.

The Panthers pushed the rest of the period, but it was the Bruins who benefited from an own goal from Florida's Sam Bennett. Coyle fluttered a puck toward net and Bennett batted it right past Panthers goalie Alex Lyon (37 saves), putting the B's ahead, 2-1, late in the period.

The third period started with the hosts notching the equalizer on Bennett's rip from the slot. Bennett took space in front of him on a Florida rush and beat Swayman blocker side at 8:29 of the third.

It appeared Pastrnak potted the game-winner with under a minute left, but Barkov's last-second goal forced overtime in a wild third period.

Reinhart's winner counted as his third goal against the Bruins this season, most among Panthers skaters.

THUMBS UP

Marc McLaughlin drew into the lineup for the first time this season and looked solid on the fourth line with Smith and A.J. Greer. 

The former Boston College Eagle only played 10:13, but finished with two shots, one hit, and a 50 percent success rate on faceoffs.

THUMBS DOWN

The power play really let the Bruins down in this one, and it wasn't as if one or two players were the problem. Neither unit was sharp and its biggest opportunity came during a four-minute power play in the first period that was ultimately squandered.

The Bruins had the sixth-best road power play before the game at 24.2 percent.

PLAY OF THE GAME

There aren't too many own goals during the season, so this feels appropiate to single out.

AROUND THE NHL

The Avalanche took care of the Blues, 4-2, and won for the seventh time in their last eight games. The reigning Stanley Cup champions are finding their footing once again after the injury bug took out almost all of their impact players throughout the first half of the season.

Blues goalie Jordan Binnington was also up to his old shenanigans again in this one.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Bruins will head to Carolina for a 5 p.m. puck drop against the Hurricanes on Sunday. The Hurricanes are the second-best team in the NHL with 70 points.
