There are two ways to look at our annual Patriots' need list as the offseason kicks off — and the filled one with the trade of Chase Winovich for ILB Mack Wilson.
Is the team satisfied with what they signed last offseason, or are they looking to improve in some spots despite just one year of data? We talked about that here, but you see it on full display when you look at the depth chart as a whole.
Let's take a look at the current depth chart, show you where we think the Patriots need help, and the avenues/prospects that might help them fill.
NEEDS THAT NEED TO BE FILLED IMMEDIATELY
No. 1 cornerback: With JC Jackson gone, the Patriots have no one on the roster that can ascend to that spot. They're going to have to acquire one that can at least be a semblance of a top corner. Janoris Jenkins was just released by the Titans. He's not a No. 1, but beggars can't be choosers.
Middle linebacker: With Dont'a Hightower and Ja'Whaun Bentley both free agents, the Patriots only have Raekwon McMillian, Cam McGrone and Terez Hall in the pipeline. One of them could fill the spot, but the Patriots need coverage. Myles Jack was just released by the Jaguars, but he's pricey.
Left edge: Kyle Van Noy's spot could go to Josh Uche or Ronnie Perkins, but after the Chase Winovich debacle, does anyone really think the Patriots are going to turn that over to a young player? I would be open to Hightower, if he takes a cheaper deal, being more of an edge/inside backup.
Left guard: If Mike Onwenu isn't a guard — and he lost his spot to Ted Karras last year — then he's a RT and they need a starting guard. Could come in the draft.
Inside linebacker: Fill by Wilson trade.
Kicker: Nick Folk re-signed.
Fullback: They don't have one, unless Dalton Keene is finally going to stay on the field. Plenty of street guys available.
COULD USE AN UPGRADE, IF PATRIOTS DON'T LOVE WHAT THEY HAVE
X/No. 1 receiver: This goes back to the Nelson Agholor chicken/egg argument ... was he not productive last year due to his play, or circumstances around him?
Nose tackle: Are the Patriots happy with what Davon Godchaux gave them last year (don't see how they could since they moved him to end), or do they think he'll be better in Year 2?
Slot receiver: Are the Patriots OK going with a slower slot like Jakobi Meyers? I would like to see more speed and move Meyers to the No. 4 spot, but they might be thrilled with him.
Left tackle: Isaiah Wynn was not good enough last season ... they need to get his replacement ready for 2023 in any event.
