TWO THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Newton not yet named starter: Had the ability to ask the players questions today for the first time in camp (had to be tested for Covid to attend practice here), so I took the opportunity to ask Cam Newton if Bill Belichick has told him he's starting opening day and Tom Curran followed up.
"You know the answer to that question, so..." Newton said.
Actually we don't, which is why we are asking.
"Y'all sit up you're asking silly questions to me and I'm looking at y'all with the same thing so I know what y'all want me to say, you know he hasn't said that, so for you to just ask a question, you know, it is what it is," Newton said. "So, every single day I'm coming out here with the anticipation to just get better. And that's the only thing that I could do so I can't control any of that. But as far as somebody else's analogy or interpretation of what Week One is I'm trying to focus on what tomorrow brings and even adjustments for tonight's meeting."
"No, I don't I don't take a personal, I just want you guys to understand like everything y'all know I know. There's no hidden motives or things like that. I do know those things like that, I can't worry about because each and every day, I don't necessarily care about who starting, I mostly care about, you know, making sure that I put the best product out there for me and I know Mac is feeling the same way I know Brian is feeling the same way and everybody else going down each and every position so you know as far as week one, we got so much to worry about prior to week one and that's where my focus is right now."
I also asked Mac Jones if he has a goal to be the opening day starter. He gave a very Alabama answer.
"For me, honestly, I've always just been blessed to be a part of a team and you never know when your time is going to come so I'm just ready to keep working, obviously I have a lot of work to do, and that's very clear but I'm going to keep working every day and everything will just work out how it's supposed to play out," Jones said.
Spirited Eagles get jump on Patriots: Not surprised because you have a new coach and a first-time head coach at that in Nick Sirianni, but the Eagles were High School Harrys on Monday, going a little over the line in terms of physical play and trash talking. Derek Barnett laid out Matt LaCosse on a late and poor pass by Cam Newton that led LaCosse right into a shoulder to the head shot by Barnett. Some of the Eagles were diving at ankles. One player took out his own teammate, CB Darius Slay on a reckless play.
"No one wants to see their teammate laying down on the ground after a play so, by no means did I intend to have any type of disaster on that play," Newton said.
Expect the Patriots to have an answer on Tuesday.
Newton throws INT, Jones a TD in two-minute: Newton got all but three reps with the first-team offensive line but he had a poor day overall that ended on an interception in the end zone. He explained he was just trying to make a play.
"It was, third down and we were down by four," he said. "And it was, it was taking a chance rather than taking the sack. You've got to give somebody a chance, and that's all it pretty much was, just a chance in the endzone. I know our job is to protect the football but given the circumstances of the play was seven seconds left and you know the time kind of quickly approaching, I was just trying to give my guy a chance."
Jones, after nearly getting picked off twice, threw a final play touchdown to N'Keal Harry.
"I mean, football is hitting the open guy so whoever's open, give him the ball and there's sometimes today I threw the ball when I shouldn't have, but we wanted to push the ball down the field and it's all about taking the shots at the right time and these guys are open on a lot of the plays," Jones said.

WR Nelson Agholor: He was a frequent target and made a lot of plays. Probably best offensive weapon all day.
DE Deatrich Wise: Had a strong 1-on-1 period and had two sacks in team drills.
DE Chase Winovich: May have just gone 2-2 in his initial round of 1 on 1s, but he looked pretty good despite beating backups. Played with energy. That was a quick rehab.
THREE DOWN
WR Kristian Wilkerson: Has had a serious drop problem starting with the Washington game.
TE Devin Asiasi: Despite having like no tight ends on the field, had one catch in 11 on 11s and don't think he quite ran the right route on two plays in the end zone from Newton.
DE Ronnie Perkins: Had a rough time in 1 on 1s with 0-2-1 record and fell on the ground at one point.
