10:15 a.m.: Patriots not content with Day 1, sign other top TE, Hunter Henry
BREAKING NEWS ... Bill Belichick doesn't like losing.
One day after pulling off a virtually unprecedented spending day in the first hours of free agency, Belichick got right back to work signing Hunter Henry, the other TE on the market, to a three-year deal for $25 million. It's one year less than Jonnu Smith, which allows them to be staggered next time as free agency.
BSJ ANALYSIS AND QB THOUGHTS
Well, ain't that something. Gronk and Hernandez ... 11 years later — and a hell of a lot more expensive.
I'm told Smith and Henry are interchangeable as the Y and F, which could make them even more dangerous and tougher to match up with.
Now, about the QB...
Obviously things can change, and the weaponry assembled by the Patriots might cause someone to toss out their contract. But the plan right now is for the Patriots to go all in on the draft QBs. All options are open. Could mean trade up. Could mean standing pat at 15. Could also mean the Patriots target someone later.
All options open.
And for those asking, I'm hearing not much going on with the David Andrews and Lawrence Guy contract fronts.
NO MOVEMENT ON DAVID ANDREWS ... YET
One of the big holes currently on the roster is at center. While there hasn't been a ton of movement, that might change now after Rodney Hudson was shockingly released by the Raiders.
Hudson is one of the best, if not the best, center available after Corey Linsley of the Packers signed with the Chargers. His availability might affect the asking price of Andrews.
Hudson may be willing to take less from a contender, having made about $60 million in his career. Andrews, looking at his first big contract, has made $12 million and could very well be looking for every dollar he can get.
If the Patriots' center does leave — Dolphins are reportedly after him — Hudson would shoot to the top of the list of available replacements. The short list:
Rodney Hudson, Raiders
Alex Mack, Falcons
Ted Karras, Dolphins.
