The Red Sox introduction to the new extra-inning rule did not go well.
After the Red Sox went up by a run in the top of the 10th, the Baltimore Orioles tied the game on a wild pitch from Matt Barnes, then, with Boston utilizing a five-man infield, won it with a bases-loaded Pedro Severino single to center, 5-4.
The Sox had previously blown a two-run lead in the eighth when Anthony Santander hit a two-run homer off Josh Taylor.
The Sox got a great start from Martin Perez, who allowed a solo homer over seven innings.
The Sox a homer from Jackie Bradley Jr., a run-scoring double from Alex Verdugo and another run that scored on an infield hit by Kevin Pillar to account for their first three runs.

10:50 Not exactly dramatic, but the Red Sox get some help from Cole Sulser, who walks three consecutive hitters to force in a run. Sox re-take the lead, 4-3.
10:32 For the first time this season, the Red Sox are headed for extra innings. Which also means that for the first time, they'll be playing with the new "runner on second base to start the inning'' rule. By virtue of having made the final out in the previous inning, Verdugo will be the baserunner in question.

10:10 On a 1-and-2 pitch (!), Josh Taylor goes upstairs with a fastball to Anthony Santander, who crushes it deep to left field. Blown save, obviously, and Perez gets jobbed out of a win
9:49 Ron Roenicke rolled the dice there, sticking with Perez when he was in a jam and at 90 pitches. Paid off when Perez got Bryan Holaday to flyout to right field, stranding two baserunners in scoring position.
9:10 Heads-up baserunning on the part of Mitch Moreland helps steal the Red Sox a run. Moreland went from first-t0-third on a single to center by Vazquez when he noticed Cedric Mullins not charging the ball, then scored from third on an infield single by Pillar.

- Ron Roenicke met with Matt Barnes Saturday to discuss how he'll be used going forward, with closer Brandon Workman and set-up man Heath Hembree gone. The Sox intend to use Barnes as something of a rover, the way he was used in the first half of last season,. Barnes struggled at times in that role last year, but believes he's more ready for it now. "It was definitely an adjustments last year,'' said Barnes. "But having gone through it...I understand it more and I'm more comfortable in the role and have a better feel for when I might be used in a game. When we first started out last year, there was some idea of when I was going to pitch later in the game based on the score and stuff, there was still a little uncertainty about how exactly it was going to work. And having gone through it and talking to (Roenicke) today, there's a greater clarity of what he's looking for.'' "As long as his mind is ready for different situations that come up,'' said Roenicke, "every year you grow a little bit, you grow more experienced. And hopefully, the confidence still grows. As long as he can go out there and be efficient with his pitches, there's really no reason he can't adapt to anything we ask of him.''
- The Red Sox today recalled LHP Jeffrey Springs and RHP Robert Stock to take the roster spots vacated by the trade of Workman and Hembree. Roenicke said the two will mostly be used in long or middle relief.
