BSJ Daily Briefing 11.05.19: Bruins take a period off, still beat Penguins; J.D. Martinez stays, Mookie goes?

Good morning!

A few random thoughts while I wonder what can stop the Bruins...

• The B's looked like they were going to blow the doors off of Sid The Kid and the Penguins but I guess they needed a challenge so they just completely punted the second period.


• Jaro Halak was pretty happy about that...

• And then the Bruins woke back up and dusted Pittsburgh. Things are so easy for this team right now. Everything's clicking.


• The biggest news in Boston sports is that J.D. Martinez didn't opt out of his contract. That's a whole lot of coin for a team that wants to cut costs (but raise ticket prices).


• So what do you do, trade Martinez? Trade Mookie Betts? Keep both for another year? Welcome to the club, Chaim Bloom. If you make the wrong choice, the Sox higher-ups will just blame you.


• Speaking of that, how about the gall of John Henry to sit up there and act like they were surprised what Dave Dombrowski did with the club and the payroll. Um, he worked for you in Florida and did the same thing in Detroit. No, I strenuously object...


• I'll be back a little later with my breakdown from the Ravens game, but this was the early look at the defensive issues.


• The fallout from the Patriots' loss to the Ravens has been predictable. It always goes the same way. For about 12 hours, Patriots fans are mad at the team and Belichick. Then they turn their sights on the media and other Patriots fans who are more realists. Finally, they act like it never happened and anyone who brings it up gets tarred and feathered.


• Look, they had a bad night, they got beat, and Baltimore was better. That's it. On to Philadelphia.


• That being said, did the Ravens really do this? Not a good look. Not smart. This will be in every Patriots locker should they play in the postseason.
