Stray thoughts while waiting for Sam Darnold to attempt another non-desperation heave/pass inside the numbers on Monday Night Football in the New England Patriots 33-0 demolition of the New York Jets...
The Jets flat-out embarrassed themselves and the National Football League on Monday night. Imagine trying to sell this pathetic product in the Big Apple.
It starts and ends with the coaching staff, who hung their players out to dry on both sides of the football.
This one was over before the first point was scored. On the opening drive of the game, Tom Brady and the Patriots offense faced a third-and-5 from the Jets 21. Please see the replay of this play. If New York coach Adam Gase does, he will fire his defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams.
At the snap of the football, both Jets safeties are basically on the goal line.
Brady drops. New York rushes four. Ben Watson runs across the field on the linebacker chasing him for an easy 10-yard pitch and catch. Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye stood and watched.
It's tough enough to stop the New England offense, 11-on-11. But 11-on-9?
Williams, a fraudulent football coach if there ever was one, certainly belongs with this bunch. Monday night, he typically out-thought himself.
Check out Williams' Wikipedia page. It clearly states that Williams, along with being a questionable human being who put bounties on opposing players' heads while coaching in New Orleans, “is known for running aggressive, attacking 4-3 schemes that put heavy pressure on opposing quarterbacks.”
Williams knows Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels are no fools. He had to figure they must use Wikipedia, right? So Williams chose this Monday nighter to throw a changeup and play soft cover-2 zone.
Brilliant. The Pats don't need the help, but Williams was sure to oblige.
Brady hit 18 of 25 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown in a 24-0 first half. He and his 104.2 passer rating weren't breathed upon and televisions outside of the six-state New England region were turned off en masse across the nation.
Look, Williams is a bad person – see his suspension – and a bad football coach – see the .393 winning percentage as a head coach. But he made life easy for the best team in the game. This was a layup for Brady.
