Revolution clinches seventh playoff spot in the East: After three years of futility, after three years of just missing out on postseason soccer, New England’s soccer sons are back in the MLS Cup Playoffs thanks to its 2-0 win over New York City FC. Second-half goals by Teal Bunbury and Gustavo Bou lifted the Revs, and the combined efforts of Matt Turner and the defensive corps kept the Pigeons off the board. The result, along with Philadelphia losing to Columbus, clinched first place in the Eastern Conference for NYCFC, as well as a spot in the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League.
Bunbury, Bou send Gillette crowd into hysterics: Bunbury had the lone real chance in the first half, an opening 45 minutes where the Revolution had 43 percent of the ball. But he wound up chipping NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson in the 66th minute, putting New England one step into the postseason. Fast-forward to late, after Turner came up with two fantastic stops on Héber, play went the other way, and the Revs carved NYC to pieces as Carles Gil found Wilfried Zahibo, who subsequently found Bou. Bou then flat-out lobbed the ball into the back of the net, securing postseason soccer for the Route 1 outfit.
