Here are the latest transactions as the Patriots near the start of training camp on Thursday:
Placed on the non-football injury list — OT Yodny Cajuste (3rd-round pick).
Placed on physically unable to perform list (PUP) — DE Deatrich Wise, OT Cole Croston, DB Nate Ebner, RB Sony Michel, WR Demaryius Thomas, CB Ken Webster (7th round).
Since the Patriots require "injured" players to report to camp this weekend, that would likely mean that no one else is expected to be on the sidelines for the start of training camp. The only players allowed to start the regular season on the PUP list are those listed above. Everyone else has to be placed on injured reserve, and two have a chance to return after Week 8.
Isaiah Wynn not on PUP — that's not news — but Chung...
There's been some "news" made about Isaiah Wynn not being on the PUP list. This is not a surprise and not news. Wynn was on the field during minicamp and while he didn't do much, he was dressed. That means he had already been cleared. Plus, on the final day, Wynn actually did some footwork drills.
Out of the players who sat out minicamp, it's newsworthy that Patrick Chung has been cleared and will be ready to go. That's significant, after the serious arm injury he sustained in the Super Bowl.
BSJ analysis of the other rosters moves
That Sony Michel (knee scope) has not been cleared yet – there were reports he'd be ready for the start camp — isn't great, but it's not the end of the world. To me, this is more about the Patriots' medical staff being extremely cautious. There's no reason to rush him. This is also further evidence on why the Patriots drafted Damien Harris. Michel, obviously, is not a sure thing health-wise to the Patriots coaches. And he shouldn't be. He wasn't last year either. Patriots got a bit lucky he made it through with an injury that needed tending to after the season.
The Cole Croston injury is interesting. He's a solid depth swing tackle and if Wynn isn't exactly full-go at the start, this would indicate that Joe Thuney is going to get snaps at left tackle to start camp — at least.
Deatrich Wise missed minicamp, so this isn't a surprise. His hands were messed up last season, so he might not have full strength back yet.
Nate Ebner missed minicamp. It's a crowded roster this year; he might need to be on the field to make the team.
Demaryius Thomas (Achilles) ... not a surprise. The only question is whether he'll ever be cleared before the season starts. He might not.
It is never, ever good when a rookie misses time in training camp. It almost always ends up poorly, or at least in a delayed start for the player in the regular season (unless it's at an instinct position like running back). So that Yodny Cajuste and Ken Webster aren't out there to start, that's not good news.
