ICYMI: The US women claimed the World Cup with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands

Also: Three ways to grow the women's game includes the return of the Breakers... but that's not all

We are underway from Chicago. US in the reds, Mexico in all black. Periodic updates to follow. FYI: No match report from the men's game to follow.

1' Dos Santos with a drive 30 seconds in, Steffen handles it.

5' HOLY USA. EXCELLENT holdup by by Altidore, lays it off for Pulisic... and then a bunch of other stuff happens, including a weak bicycle by Altidore and the initial save by Memo Ochoa.

8' OMG, ALMOST for Altidore. Ream with a wonderful release, Altidore has a first touch and a half, splits the center-halves... and pulls it just wide of the far post.

10' Neat high line from contention by the US.... and a foul by Altidore. No card, though. Tata Martino talking to the fourth official. Here we go.

14' Foul by Arriola on Antuna.

15' That was dangerous as the defending played it back to Steffen, lightly... Steffen boots it.

16' ALMOST for Guardado. He takes a cross, but Arriola comes into and slides to deny.

20' Corner to the US after a nice cross by Cannon into the box, cleared and sent over the end line by Mexico....

22' Alvarez fouls Pulisic, and Rodriguez kicks the ball right into Pulisic's head. Ooooof.

28' Handle on Mexico. This game is moving.

31' OMG Arriola. He dispossesses Memo Ochoa, he shoots between Ochoa's legs, targeting the far post, but missed the target by inches. INCHES.

34' Miazga with a big stop on Guardado.

36' This time it's Ream with the stop. El Tri getting more of a foothold in the match. Up to 53 percent possession.

42' Dos Santos has a goooo, just wide.

45' Pizarro is down after he hyperextends his elbow after a collision with Cannon. OUCH. Mexico might need a sub.... one minute minimum of stoppages.

HALF

Phew. 47 percent possession for the US. Both sides have two shots on target.... just box to box stuff tonight.

Second half underway. The Americans get us going.

47' HANDBAGS! Moreno whacks Altidore in the back, and then McKennie comes in and gets involved, Guardado puts his hands on McKennie's throat. He and Guardado get a talking to. US-Mexico, I tell you.

50' Cross by Arriola into the box is knocked over the end line by Mexico. Second corner for the US.

51' Another corner after Guardado, on the post, heads Morris's header off the line.... McKennie also had a shot that was deflected.

52' Try by Mexico through the box.

54' Arriola concedes a needless free kick in a dangerous area. 25 yards away.

55' Guardado.... over the bar.

57' Guardado.... over the bar again.

58' Guardado.... over the bar AGAIN. I sense a theme. Do you?

59' Pizarro... you know the drill by now.

61' Roldan coming on for Morris.

63' Steffen with a save on a deflection.... he sends it the other way, and it feels like that's the first time the ball has been in the Mexico defending half in fifteen minutes.

64' Zardes on for Altidore. Second American sub.

67' Hamana hamana hamana, Mexico with a good try, but Miazga deflects it. Corner.

68' Guardado put it on target! It's a miracle! Steffen saves it.

71' First shot for the Americans in some time as Pulisic gives it a ride, and wide.

73' GOAL MEXICO, and it's Jonathon Dos Santos with the tally to put El Tri ahead, 1-0. Phenomenal lay-off by Jimenez to set that up. Steffen could have made that stop. Alyssa Naeher would have made that stop.

78' Corner by Pulisic, headed by Miazga... wide. I didn't want extra time tonight.

81' Charlie Rodriguez on for Pizarro. First Mexican sub.

83' Ream coming off for Lovitz. Last American sub, unless they can force extra time.

85' Hey, a foul by Mexico....

86' Pulisic's free kick goes into the box, but headed over the end line.... Alvarado on for Antuna.

87' Another US corner... SAVE Ochoa, Roldan had a chance to poach.

88' Reyes coming on for Guardado. Tactical sub to hold onto the lead, Reyes is a center half.

90' Three minutes minimum added on after a lazy Bradley pass in the midfield.

90+3' At least Pulisic seems upset.

FULL TIME

Takeaways:

1. Alyssa Naeher could have made that save.

2. Is there another holding midfielder in the US pool? Michael Bradley needs to step away.

3. Certain other players need to step away, too.
