NBA Free Agency has kicked off on Sunday evening and we will be keeping track of all the major moves from a Celtics standpoint right here at BSJ.
Kevin Durant commits to Nets: Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was first to report that one of the top players in the game is expected to team up with Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan in New York. This is a huge development in the East obviously but does not put the Nets at the top of the heap next year due to Durant's injury. There is also some question on whether the Nets will have to clear out salary in order to sign Jordan, which could eliminate some key pieces on the roster.
Rozier headed to Charlotte in sign-and-trade: Shams Charamia of Stadium was first to report that the guard will be sign-and-traded by Boston in a three-year, $58 million deal. This is a crazy amount for the guard but should serve the Celtics well when it comes to orchestrating the necessary numbers for a three-team sign-and-trade with Brooklyn or another team possibly. This also pays Rozier at the level for his play during the 2018 postseason so it's a big bet by the Hornets on that front that he recaptures that.
Al Horford reportedly won't come back to Boston: Despite the fact that the Celtics could still bring in Horford if they pull off a sign-and-trade for Irving, Walker and Rozier, Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald is reporting that a source close to Horford indicates that he still won't be returning to Boston. It remains to be seen where he will be landing his payday (Philadelphia, LA Clippers look like top contenders) but the fact remains that the C's may not want to pay a hefty asking price if he's commanding a four-year deal. This will be a situation to monitor in the coming days since there is still a chance Horford could be used in a sign-and-trade deal himself, which would help keep Boston above the cap.
Derrick Favors could hit the free agent market: The Jazz have come to terms with Bojan Bogdanovic on a big four-year deal ($73 million) so they will have to clear out some money in order to have enough room. Favors has a non-guaranteed deal so he seems like a candidate to be moved, whether it's via trade or being waived. The Celtics will have to hope its the latter in order to have a chance to make a run on him with mid-level money.
Al Horford headed to Philadelphia: The big man will sign with the Sixers via a four-year, $97 million deal that could be worth up to $107 million via championship bonuses. This is a huge blow for the Celtics from a competitive standpoint to lose their top big man to a division rival. With Jimmy Butler headed to Miami for Josh Richardson in a sign-and-trade, the Sixers will now have a huge starting five with Simmons/Richardson/Harris/Horford/Embiid in the mix. Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the C's did offer a fourth year for Horford but it did not come close to the money Philadelphia was offering. The Celtics may try to work a three-team sign-and-trade as part of the deal but it will likely cost them an asset to do so with Philadelphia. Their path to the NBA Finals just got even tougher with Horford out of the mix.
