Final: Red Sox 2, Orioles 1 (12)

Andrew Benintendi homered with two outs in the 12th inning to give the Red Sox a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The win pulled the Red Sox to the .500 mark for the first time since the second game of the season.

It appeared the Sox were headed to defeat in the bottom of the 11th when Trey Mancini drove a ball over the wall in left center. But Jackie Bradley Jr. raced over and timed his leap perfectly, extending himself fully to bring the ball back and save a run.

Chris Sale didn't figure in the decision but had his best start of the season, allowing one run on three hits over eight innings with 14 strikeouts. He didn't allow a hit until two were out in the sixth.

A solo homer by Mookie Betts in the third accounted for the only other Red Sox run.

IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

10:44  That's on the short list of best Bradley catches ever. Trey Mancini hits a shot to left-center, but Bradley tracks it and, timing his leap perfectly, pulls the ball back from several feet above the wall. Brasier thought it was gone and hung his head. Mancini couldn't believe it either -- tips his helmet in salute. Game-saver, literally.

10:05  Nice work by Matt Barnes, who allows a leadoff double to Trey Mancini, but then gets a couple of groundouts and a strikeout around an infield hit, stranding two runners in scoring position and sending the game to extras.

9:38   That's it for Sale, who finishes with a flourish, adding two more strikeouts to finish with 14, one shy of his career high.

9:25   Betts, who was going on the pitch, tries to get a little too aggressive and attempts to advance to third with the ball sitting between second and third after it bounced off the glove of Alberto. He's an easy out at third.

9:16  Sale racks up an immaculate inning, with nine pitches for nine strikes -- three strikeouts.

9:09 Sandy Leon singles off Martin's glove, giving him two hits tonight. Last multi-hit game for Leon was last July 15.

8:55 In very short order, Sale loses his no-hit bid, the shutout and lead.  Following a soft-serve liner into center by Rickard for his first hit, Trey Mancini drives a double to the gap in left-center, scoring Rickard.

8:51  For as well as Sale has pitched, Cashner hasn't been far behind. He's allowed just three hits in keeping the Sox to a single run through six innings. At 104 pitches, he's probably done for the night, and unless something changes,in line for a tough-luck loss.

8:45  In addition to his obvious dominance, Sale is also being pretty efficient. He's at 69 pitches through five innings.

8:22  The O's lineup -- mostly younger players -- is being overmatched by Sale, who has seven strikeouts through four innings and hasn't allowed a hit. The slider has great tilt tonight and the four-seamer has topped out at 96 mph
