Final: Red Sox 6, Chicago White Sox 1 taken at BSJ Headquarters (Red Sox)

Following a crushing walk-off loss the previous night, the Red Sox rebounded nicely Friday, pasting the White Sox 6-1.

Rafael Devers, who made a crucial error in the ninth which led to Thursday's loss, gained some retribution with a three-run homer in the first, his first homer of the year. It was all the offense the Sox would need, but just for good measure, Michael Chavis added a two-run homer in the sixth.

Chris Sale picked up his first win of the year, shutting out the White Sox for six innings while allowing just three hits and fanning 10.

IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

11:03 Colten Brewer has the eighth with a 6-0 lead....and proceeds to walk two of the first three hitters.

9:58 Michael Chavis does not hit cheap home runs. He got a hanging breaking ball over the plate and cranked that 459 feet, down the line in left. Three of the four that he's hit have been well over 400 feet.

9:53 Sale bails himself out of his first jam. After putting runners on first and second (double, HBP), Sale rears back and strikes out the next three hitters in succession.

9:39 If nothing else, Reynaldo Lopez has shown that he has Mookie Betts's number. Three at-bats, with a weak groundout and two strikeouts.

9:17  It's not getting any better for Pearce, who's the very definition of "in-between'' at the plate currently -- indecisive, too slow on fastballs and out in front on breaking pitches.

9:08 Sale flashing dominant stuff (95 mph four-seamer) at times, and also being efficient after a longish first inning. He's needed just 21 pitches over the last two innings.

8:46 Awkward slide for Tzu-Wei Lin as he's thrown out trying to steal second, with his left knee seemingly stuck in the dirt as he approached the bag. He was favoring that left leg as he came off the field. We'll see if he remains in the game. UPDATE: Lin is out of the game, with Steve Pearce going to LF and Andrew Benintendi shifting over to center.

8:34 Chris Sale showed good command in the first inning, but the nine-pitch at-bat with Jose Abreu, which ended in a walk, is an early reminder of what can happen with those sort of long at-bats. Two starts ago, too many of those early in the game limited Sale to six innings because of pitch count.

8:20 Rafael Devers makes up some for Thursday night with his first homer of the season - a mammoth shot to straightaway center, scoring Martinez and Xander Bogaerts ahead of him. Devers can handle premium gas and he did so there - hammering a 94 mph fastball on the outer half and hitting it more than 430 feet.

8:15 Martinez looks more like himself the last two nights. After going hitless over 10 at-bats over the previous two games at home, Martinez had three more hits Thursday night, and just drove a double to right to continue that turnaround.
