Revs extend Caldwell - Braintree native to remain in Foxborough for foreseeable future taken at BSJ Headquarters (Revolution)

The Revolution have extended a massive part of its core unit.

The club announced Thursday afternoon that 28-year-old defensive midfielder Scott Caldwell, a Homegrown signing out of Braintree, has signed a multi-year extension which will keep him with the Original Ten outfit for the foreseeable future.

As per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

Caldwell originally signed with the club in 2013, becoming the Revolution’s second Homegrown player in club history. He has made 149 starts, 182 appearances, totaling over 13,000 minutes played. He is also an integral part of New England’s lineup, regularly making the match day squad.

He has 5 goals and 17 assists in his career.

BSJ Analysis

I know there is a segment of the fandom who thinks it’s time to move on from the core group — namely Caldwell, Diego Fagundez — but it won’t happen this year, or within the next couple, at the very least, with the Braintree native being extended.

Caldwell has a very high soccer IQ, and is consistently one of the hardest workers New England has when it comes to defending in the midfield. But he wasn’t extended just for his defending: he works his tail off to help create scoring chances, and last year had multiple chances to help the offense, finally putting two in. He is an integral cog to the machine.

He brings tons of intangibles to the table — and yes, I agree, he needs more competition in the form of another skilled player at the No. 6 role. Look at what happened with Carles Gil coming in at the No. 10, pushing Fagundez back out wide.

He is what I would call a safe signing. You know what you’re going to get with him, and that’s 100 percent effort for the Crayon Crest.
