Received a lot of good questions this week on a variety of topics, including the franchise tag, Josh Rosen, Trey Flowers, and much more. Let's get right to them.
Question from Twitter follower Sam Zorfas:are these the FINAL numbers for this year’s franchise tags or can they be altered based on new deals?[table id=273 /]
Question from Chad on Twitter:Why 5.98 on gost? Chart says 4.97?
Question from Twitter follower Randy Scott:When do Pats have to extend offer to Jonathan Jones?
Question from Twitter follower @LFC___opinions: With the top-51 rule, what would Josh Rosen count against the patriots cap number for the coming season? Can a team tag and trade a player if the player hasn’t signed the tender? (Hypothetical situation if Arizona loved Brown or Flowers) Thanks Miguel, really enjoy your cap coverage
Question from BSJ subscriber ty: Great stuff, Miguel. What is the delay on the Hernandez credit?! His conviction was almost 4yrs ago (hell, he’s been deceased for almost two). For a League that is so detailed on every aspect of the Cap, it seems counter-intuitive to make judgement/give credit YEARS later when the issue seems pretty cut and dry.
Question: What does your $24.3 million salary cap space number account for?
- The $3,173,423 carryover
- The $5,640,675 adjustments number
- The eight futures contracts with the former members of the 2018 practice squad
- PPE escalators for Joe Thuney and Elandon Roberts
Question: What does your $24.3 million salary cap space number not account for?
- The Rookie pool. Why? Patriots have not made any selections yet. Please use $3 million if you need a number.
- The salaries of players 52 and 53.
- The 2019 practice squad salaries.
- RFA tenders.
- Franchise tags.
- Paycuts, restructures, trades, retirements.
Question from BSJ subscriber packersboys: Both OT Cannon and OG Mason seem like decent contracts for the team. I know some fans are down on Cannon but I think he is at least a decent RT. Do you think it would make sense to turn one of those players 2019 salaries into a bonus for cap space? Pats could pay Cannon a $4.5 million restructuring bonus and save $3 million this year. Similarly, they could pay Mason a $3 million restructuring bonus and save I believe $2.4 million this year.
Question from BSJ subscriber panthius: I am curious what the salaries of Joe Thuney and Elandon Roberts were prior to the PPE. Hopefully they will ink Thuney to a nice extension to keep him here for the foreseeable future before he hits free agency. As for Roberts, could they get another linebacker for less money that doesn’t consistently overrun the play.
Twitter follower Gary Caffrey: then asked: How does that change if you add UDFA signings from that off season?
Question from Twitter follower Corey Galante: This might be a dumb question but if a player retires, is there any dead money on that teams cap or is everything off the cap? Thank you so much I love your work!
Question from Twitter follower Brian: Miguel, are incentives not likely to be earned counted against the cap, when the contract is signed?
Question from Twitter follower #Patriots: What is the difference between a restructure and a pay cut?
Question from Twitter follower Sunny Saggu: Hey @patscap I'm guessing no comp pick if Dwayne Allen gets signed by someone else?
Question from Twitter follower J: What round did we take Flowers in? Can’t we transition tag him?
Question from Twitter follower #Patriots: What would be a fair deal to keep Trey flowers?
Question from Twitter follower Mr. Quindazzi: Are the rookie draft contract $ more on a linear or logarithmic scale?
Question from Twitter follower Nathaniel: Robby Anderson =2nd rnd tender.Worth exploring with pick #64?
Question from Twitter follower Triple D: hey Miguel, when do the Pats receive Brady’s 5M crédit for incentives not earned, the first day of the new league year? And doesn’t Gronk have some as well? Thanks you
Question: What is your current Patriots 2019 salary cap space number?
