CHICAGO — On an afternoon where the New England defense struggled to get a stop against a middle-of-the-road offense, it saved its signature moment for the last play of the game.
Trailing 38-31 with two seconds left in regulation and sitting on their own 45-yard line, Chicago’s Mitch Trubisky dropped back and flung a Hail Mary down the field in hopes of a late touchdown that would theoretically force overtime. Duron Harmon and Josh Gordon — the latter in a role usually reserved for Rob Gronkowski — were playing deep safety.
“My job is to be the deepest,” said Harmon. “Not to jump, assess everything and to make sure the ball doesn’t get tipped behind me.”
Harmon and Gordon were out there at the end of the first half in a similar situation, and Harmon had some advice for Gordon.
“Just go get the football,” Harmon said after the game. “He’s probably one of the best jump-ball receivers in the league, if not the best. He had a great jump ball today on the sideline.
“Just go get the football.”
Remarkably, Chicago receiver Kevin White ended up coming down with it … a yard shy of the goal line.
