Sweeney: My choice for Revs' 2018 Defender of the Year is.... taken at Gillette Stadium (Revolution)

FOXBOROUGH -- We are just past the hour of 5 on this beautiful Sunday evening, Oct. 14, and media voting just closed for the 2018 Revolution Defender of the Year Award. Voting started just before 4 p.m. on Oct. 2 via SurveyMonkey, and my fellow Blue Level Denizens and I had five options from which to choose this year:

  • Andrew Farrell

  • Jalil Anibaba

  • Antonio Delamea

  • Claude Dielna

  • Brandon Bye

  • Only played 22 minutes of the season opener; red carded for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity — that wasn’t defense, that was a mugging

  • Freezing and not tracking back on Josef Martinez in the home Atlanta game

  • Handling against Philadelphia at home

  • Own goal against Columbus

  • Generally slow in tracking back

  • Couldn’t contain NYCFC at Yankee Stadium; slow in trying to stop NYCFC at home in March

  • Constant giveaways

  • Had a couple of good months of play, but that doesn’t outweigh any of the above

  • Was promising at left back, but gave up a horrid goal to Aleksander Katai

  • Had 27 blocks, which was an up for him, BUT…

  • Switched off on the LA throw-in which led to the match-winner on July 14

  • Slow to react on Philadelphia’s second goal on Aug. 11

  • Did not crack back fast enough on Cory Burke’s goal against Philadelphia on Aug. 25

  • Found himself bullied off the ball by Dom Dwyer in Orlando

  • Put the Revs down to nine men against Philadelphia in the opener

  • Generally played without tact #HandsLikeACementTruck

  • Was at the heart of the 1-0 loss to Dallas, ball-watching

  • Was at the heart of the 3-2 loss to the Galaxy, not clearing set pieces
