Final: Yankees 8, Red Sox 5 - Yankees join Red Sox in 100-win club

Different day, same result.

The New York Yankees again teed off on a parade of Red Sox pitchers early, then held off a late-inning comeback by the Red Sox for an 8-5 victory.

The win gave the Yankees 100 wins on the season, marking the first time the two rivals have won 100 or more games in the same season.  The Red Sox have won 107 with one game remaining between the teams which will determine who wins the season series.

The Yankees got two homers -- one from Gleyber Torres and one from Giancarlo Stanton. The one by Torres helped establish a record for most homers in a season by a major league team, eclipsing the mark set by the Seattle Mariners in 1997.

Boston's only homer came in the ninth -- a two-run bullpen shot by Brock Holt.

3:44   Well, that's a first. A fan in the stands, intent on "throwing back'' the home run ball hit by Giancarlo Stanton, winds up from the second row of the Monster Seats and actually hits Stanton -- on a bounce -- as he rounds second base during his home run trot.

2:30  Not a strong showing by Eduardo Rodriguez. In his first inning of work, he walked the first hitter he faced and allowed a single to his third. This inning has been worse -- three more hits and a walk, including a two-run homer by Gleyber Torres as the Yankees set a major league record for most homers by a team in a season: 265

2:12   Pretty remarkable that, given how he started the year offensively, Jackie Bradley Jr. is fifth on the team in doubles with 32.

1:17   It's an unearned run to be sure, but that ends Nathan Eovaldi's streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings against the Yankees.

1:08 A play like that -- where Rafael Devers fields a relatively routine grounder, then makes a wild throw to first -- is the kind of thing that must frighten the Red Sox half to death.
