First and 10: Wrapping up Week 1; checking in on some ex-Patriots taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

(Adam Richins/Boston Sports Journal)

Welcome to first and 10, a roundup of all the (mostly) Patriots-related news you need to start your Monday. Grab your coffee and let’s get to it.

A few thoughts on Sunday's 27-20 win for the Patriots...

--The Patriots obviously fancy themselves as a game-plan offense, so the quick-strike stuff to the likes of Phillip Dorsett, James Develin and the rest makes sense when you are facing that Houston pass rush. But it's also indicative of what we're going to see more of, at least over the first four weeks. Good way to keep opposing pass rushers off your back, and a good way to keep something of an offensive rhythm. It wasn't classic Tom Brady and he wasn't overly pleased with the offense after the game, but in terms of opening acts, it was enough for a win.

--Was sort of unimpressed by Houston. It's Week 1, but the Texans came up small in big moments against the Patriots. They couldn't ouch it in early, and never really managed to make it the difference. Deshaun Watson doesn't appear to be suffering from too many aftereffects from the ACL injury when it comes to running, but the throws aren't there. Have to imagine the group will eventually round into form -- there's too much talent -- but they seemed sort of tentative as a group on Sunday.

--Oh, and if you see Matthew Slater, wish him a belated Happy Birthday. The All-Pro and special teams captain turned 33 on Sunday.
